Lange's Appalling Political Maneuvering Demonstrates No Concern for the Health and Lives of Needy Montanans

From the Billings Gazette: Last week, Montana House Republican leaders promised to slash all but $300 out of a $3 billion two-year budget proposal for the Department of Public Health and Human Services, deleting all federal aid. Michael Lange, R-Billings, House majority leader, said that he would slash spending to win the vote of the Legislature's lone Constitution Party member, Rick Jore.

"We'll knock it down exactly where we need to be to get it where (Jore) wants," Lange told Capitol reporters. What Lange is using as a political chip is health care for 300,000 Montanans, including the majority of elders in Montana nursing homes, personal care attendants for severely disabled children and adults, addiction treatment, childhood vaccines and health insurance for than 13,000 Montana children. Sure, Lange expects the Senate to put the money back. But his appalling political maneuvering demonstrates no concern for the health and lives of needy Montanans.

House Republicans Turn Their Backs on Montana Farmers and Ranchers

Last Wednesday, House Republicans lead by Rep. Rick Ripley (R-Wolf Creek), cut state's agriculture budget by nearly a half million dollars and slashed funding for the Department of Livestock. Agriculture is critically important to Montana's economy, and the cuts will hurt Montana farmers and ranchers.

In a move that defies common sense, Republicans cut the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) testing initiative. Funding that ensures that livestock feed sold in Montana isn't contaminated with Mad Cow Disease. Prevention could save us millions of dollars in losses long-term by helping prevent Mad Cow Disease from spreading to Montana.

Congressman Rehberg clears Congress' low bar

At a recent congressional hearing on education, members of the House House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies took their turn questioning U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings about the Bush-Cheney 2008 education budget.

When Rep. Rehberg's turn came to speak for the people of Montana, what did he have to say for himself?

"I prove the fact that there's no literacy test to run for office," Rehberg self-deprecated. "I made the top half of the class possible, and then for me there is no top half."  You can't make this stuff up. More.

Rehberg Votes Against Ad Disaster Help for Montana Farmers and Ranchers

In another dumb move, Rep. Dennis Rehberg (R-Mont.) fought against agricultural disaster aid for Montana farmers and ranchers.

The AP reported that, "Western and Midwestern members of Congress have been trying for more than a year to find a way to pay farmers for losses due to an ongoing drought, along with flooding and other disasters. House Republicans have opposed the idea, but Democrats who are now in charge have supported it. President Bush has remained opposed, saying it is too expensive.

Montana Rep. Denny Rehberg, who sits on the spending committee that approved the bill, said he voted against the legislation "in good conscience."

North Dakota Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple, a Republican, was in Washington this week lobbying the federal Agriculture Department to support the disaster money.

"What it's about is the impact on the economy of an entire region," he said. "When you come down to the human level, there is no question that there are farmers meeting with their bankers right now, and whether or not they can farm this year is dependent on whether this program is approved." More.

The Bar Keeps Getting Lower

The Great Falls Tribune reported that, "A Republican lawmaker pleaded guilty Monday to drunken driving, after being arrested over the weekend.

"Red Lodge Rep. Scott Boggio's passenger was a fellow legislator who is a member of a county DUI task force.

"Court records show Boggio had a blood alcohol level of 0.14 when he was arrested Saturday night. The legal limit in Montana is 0.08.

"'Well, I guess that, you know, anyone who goes out to dinner and has a few drinks along with their meal can get a DUI,' Boggio said Tuesday.

"Boggio's passenger, Rep. Elsie Arntzen, R-Billings, is a member of the Yellowstone County DUI Task Force." More.
