Our All Star Line-Up:

Spain

Keeper: 2005 Palacios "Las Terasses" Priorat (Normally $36; Wine Advocate 93 points)

Due to its extraordinary quality and attractive price, Les Terrasses has acquired a passionate following. Winemaker Alvaro Palacios relies on some of Priorat’s finest small growers to produce this wine; to get the best fruit from the steepest and oldest vineyards, he has been known to offer them three times the going rate. Trained at Bordeaux's Chateau Petrus, Palacios is one of the most celebrated winemakers in Spain. Black cherry, dark chocolate, mountain herb and mineral notes in a polished texture over firm tannins.

Most Value-able Player: 1707 Almansa (Normally $15)

From the grapes used in the blend to the finish, this wine seems very classic, very polished. The texture and structure are textbook for a fuller red: it stands up straight, but isn’t overly ostentatious.  It’s firm, but not rigid. The fruits range from your standard dark cherry and blackberry notes to more exotic hints of fig and orange peel. Really great, and even more impressive given the bargain price.

Germany

Keeper: 2005 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese

(Normally $50; Wine Spectator 97 points)

Peach, lime and floral aromas and flavors are highlighted by a golden apple tone in this pure, focused Riesling, with a juicy, lime- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. The acidity still manages to be light and springy amidst all the decadence, which is the key to making this an exceptional wine. Hold on to it for at least another 2 years if you can bear the wait! You will be richly rewarded.

Most Value-able Player: Gysler Dry Riesling (1L; Normally $17)

Only a few of these super cool liters left! A dry Riesling is incredibly refreshing for summertime, and this one features straw and apple fragarences. Importer Terry Theise says "It opens the spit gates!" thanks to its bold acidity. Shimmery, pretty and balanced, with a spicy-tart finish. It will change the way you think of Riesling!

Let's hope for an Italy/France matchup in the Olympics soccer - you may see some more crazy football-inspired deals!

Gin & Juice: Our Favorite Gin Recipes

In honor of the returning heat, we're offering one of our favorite gins, Plymouth, for a special price! It's usually $24; get it this weekend for $22.50. We find Plymouth to be the perfect combination of delicacy and herbaciousness, with no syrupy aftertaste.

Will's Favorite: Gin & Tonic

It's hard to beat this classic, and there are few drinks easier to prepare. Slice up a lime, and you're ready to beat the heat.

Tyler's Favorite: Negroni

Combine 1 oz gin with 3/4 oz Campari and 1 oz sweet vermouth in a shaker with ice; shake gently, so as not to disturb the drink's bright, clear color. Strain into a martini glass, I prefer a highball glass, and peel a long, thing slice of orange twist over the glass, so the essential oils mist the drink's surface.

Courtney's Favorite: French 75

Named for a WWI lightweight machine gun, it becomes apparent why the morning after if you drink too many. But in moderation, what could be better than gin & champagne?? Combine 3/4 oz gin with a dash of simple syrup and grenadine, and 1/4 oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice in a shaker with ice. Stir gently and strain into a champagne flute. Top with champagne (or cava).

Refreshing New Wines in Stock

Go Beyond Pinot Grigio

Mandrarossa Fiano (Sicily, Italy; $9)

At such a great price, you have no excuse not to venture out of your comfort zone and try this wine! Many of you are probably unfamiliar with fiano, a grape native to southwest Italy's Campania region. But if your comfort zone includes anything from Pinot Grigio to Viognier, there are qualities of Fiano that will appeal to you. Very aromatic, and with a slightly round body, the acidity is present but second to the layers of lush, almost tropical fruits. Yet it remains demure and capable of pleasing a wide range of palates. In fact, it's a great option for gatherings or parties.

New Rosés!

Domaine la Manarine Cotes du Rhone Rosé ($18)

Gilles Gasq vinifies his Cotes du Rhone Rosé for importer Rosenthal Wine Merchants from his vineyards situated on the prestigious Plan de Dieu near Trevaillan. Blended from Grenache (50%) and Mourvedre (50%), this wine carries a dark rosé color and is quite rich with notes of violets, raspberries, and strawberries.

Verget du Sud Vaucluse Rosé of Syrah ($17)

A knock-out rosé that captures everything you could want in a dry, refreshing and thirst-quenching summer quaffer. At 12.5 percent alcohol, this Syrah rosé hits the sweet spot. A raspberry bomb, with lively white pepper and lovely candied lemons on the aromatic nose. Captivating flavors of red peaches and red currants show outstanding balance and freshness.
