Spend Time with the History of Early Tennessee

Dear ,

Mansker's Station Wins Tennessee Association of Museums Awards

At the recent Tennessee Association of Museums Conference in Jackson, Mansker's Station picked up two awards. The first went to long time volunteer and friend of the site, Joy Mayfield. Congratulations Joy!

Our second award recognizes the Colonial Fair 2007 Poster. Created by graphic design artist and volunteer Albert Roberts, the poster "was instrumental in the overall look, theme, and feel of Colonial Fair."

Early Tennessee History Lecture Series

This month kicks off one of our new programs, the Early Tennessee History Lecture Series. The last Thursday of each month, from April - July, we will have a guest speaker in the Welcome Center. This program is free to the public, and begins at 6:00 pm.

Our speaker for April is Ann Toplovich, who is the Executive Director of the Tennessee Historical Society. She is currently working on a biography of Rachel Donelson Jackson, and you may have seen her on several Jackson documentaries including the recent PBS documentary Andrew Jackson: Good, Evil, and the Presidency.

Her talk is titled "Divorce Early American Style: The Mayhem and Politics of Rachel and Andrew Jackson's Marriage," and will cover her marriage to Lewis Robards, the elopement with Jackson, and the impact of her divorce in the 1820 Presidential elections.

Encampment a Success!

The damp weather did not deter participants and guests to this year's annual Spring Encampment! Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, it was our largest encampment in several years!

Highlights of the encampment included demonstrations of 18th century shoemaking and bookbinding, along with the hunt for one of our militia deserters...thankfully he was caught!

Partnership with Local Master Gardeners

This year we are excited to partner with the Sumner County Master Gardeners to help us better care for our gardens! Recently several gardener students prepared our herb garden and the Bowen cemetary for planting, and they fertilized and pruned the orchard. Shown right is Master Gardener student John Pigg, who is preparing the herb bed.
