2010 MARCH OZ NEWS
Wiz Words
by Jeanne Forbes

As I write the Wiz Words I am sitting in a wheelchair with my left arm and leg propped up waiting to have surgery in two days.  I slipped on ice and landed on my fanny.  I was not too graceful as I broke three bones in my left ankle and two bones in my left wrist.  They also were both dislocated.  After surgery I may have trouble going thru metal detectors at airports as I will have both metal plates and screws.  According to the doctors I will be off my trike for about four months.  I’m sure before this ordeal is over I will have big time cabin fever.  I really appreciate my friends and family helping me since the accident.  Special thanks to Roger and Helen Wait who took care of me in Colorado and hauled me back to Kansas.

Wicked Wind Has New Route

This year Lake Afton will be the starting point for the Wicked Wind 100 on Sunday, May 16, 2010. Camping is available for a fee.  Showers are free, bring your own towel.  Sign up early so we can beat last year’s number of riders. We will have the standard 25-, 50-, and 100-mile rides.  We have a lot of returning volunteers doing SAG stops this year; please thank them during the ride. This year pre-registration guarantees you receive a bike bag, if your registration is prior to Friday, May 7th.  T-shirts are also available during pre-registration for an additional fee.

Editors' Bike Corner

I had an interesting revelation at last month’s Oz Club meeting---we were once again “preaching to the choir” while listening to Wanda Groves expressing why we are losing—or perhaps are failing---to gain in our membership numbers.

I guess it hit me as I looked around to see fewer people showing up than usual, not that we have what can be considered a good turnout at any monthly meeting anyhow.  Wanda’s words were lingering in my head as I saw what could be described as a dwindling membership among our ranks.

Touring Report

by Gary Vreeland
First Quarter Touring

This winter has been pretty brutal towards cycling.  December had very cold temperatures, January was reasonable and now, February has snow and ice that has lasted for weeks.  Still, the OZ Bike Club will continue to organize and promote winter riding.  In the fall, Byron and Heartland Cycle host an annual Pumpkin Pie Ride.  The New Years Day Ride hosted by Ruth and Bicycle Pedaler is a grand tradition to start out the New Year.  The Cherry Pie Ride in February is a great reason to get out and ride for some desserts to ride for.  Plus there other rides scheduled every month of the year.  Rides in the winter are usually and little shorter and a slower pace, which gives a unique perspective of the world around you.  Put on an extra layer of clothing over your regular cycling gear and give winter riding a try.  Do it because you can, do it because it freaks most people out, including some cyclists.

Racing Report

by David Wills

The racing team is gearing up for the spring fling series. That starts the end of February.  We are also working on our own first race.  The Wichita Omnium will be held on Memorial weekend.  We would love for the Oz Bike club come and watch some top notch Kansas racers, even some from out of state as well.  We are also looking for volunteers for the three races that we are putting on.  Contact me at (316) 217-3697 or dwills6@cox.net if anyone is interested in helping out.
