August 24, 200

Welcome to a New School Year! We sincerely hope all of our families and staff enjoyed a fun and relaxing summer and are ready for a great school year at Lawrence. We are very excited to announce that our enrollment has reached a new record at over 300 students. What a way to start the new school year!

Dismissal Tips: In order to make dismissal run a little smoother at both campuses, please follow these guidelines. For Lower School, please remember that dismissal is between 3-3:15 pm. Due to police department requests, we are unable to allow any cars to line up for dismissal prior to 3 pm as this will block Wallings Road traffic. So please plan your arrival for between 3-3:15 pm only. For Upper School, we remind you that the circular drive is only to be used by private transportation services and school busses. Carpool and car drivers are asked to circle the parking lot and line up around the perimeter. Thank you for your cooperation!

Are All Your School Forms In?  Parents in both Upper and Lower schools are asked to be sure and return all forms from your summer packets to the main office ASAP!

HEAD NOTES
From Head of School, Lou Salza

So much has changed this year for the Lawrence community and for me (now I am a member of a pride of Lions!). Changes and contrasts are the norm at both school and in our lives, yet the challenges of school remain remarkably the same regardless of where one goes to school or even when.

This week, I watched in wonder as Lawrence School opened its doors to 300 students on two different campuses in two different counties. The buildings we inhabit were built as recently as last year, and as long ago as the middle of the last century.

Our students journey to school in minutes from nearby towns like Walton Hills and Brecksville, and in hours from as far away as Erie, PA.  They step with courage and confidence into our environment despite struggles and even failure in other schools.  They trust that we all - students and staff - will have another chance to make this journey successfully together.

They range in age from six to 16. Some barely reach four feet - and others stand over six feet tall. They study everything from Code Breakers to Calculus, using a range of technologies from pencils, paper, and chalk boards, to computers and electronic notebooks.

The challenge that we understand so well at Lawrence is and has been the same for every school in every era: to create a learning community where growth is the norm for teachers and students, where education is personal, and where taking a risk to try something new and difficult is protected, honored and celebrated.

At Lawrence, we hope that our students and teachers, parents and friends learn from one another that all schools are transitional.  And as we face the challenges and changes of the day and our lives together on our journey through these particular corridors and classrooms, I hope we all come to understand that differences need not be disabilities. Many thanks to our Lawrence trustees, alumni, parents and friends who support our efforts through servant leadership and generous support of hand and heart.  It all matters--and makes a difference!

Welcome to the new school year, and to our pride of Lawrence Lions!
