Research Short Story
Contaminants of Concern in Biosolids Amended Turf Grass
By Dana Devin-Clarke, University of Washington
A study was conducted to determine the fate of estrogens, triclosan (an antimicrobial) and ibuprofen in turf grass soils amended with biosolids and
reclaimed water. The study was conducted with turf collected from the Foster Links Golf Course in Tukwila, WA. This course may be
one of the first to use reclaimed water from the King County's South Treatment Plant. The study was done to document turf response to reclaimed
water as well as the fate of these COCs in the soils irrigated with reclaimed water or amended with biosolids...(click to continue reading)

Regulations Corner
NBMA Submits Comments on Quebec's Draft Biosolids
Standards
By Denise Vieira, SYLVIS Environmental
The NBMA's Regulation Development Committee was created to review
federal, state, provincial and local regulations developed for
biosolids
management. The Regulation Development Committee recently reviewed and
provided comments on the Draft Standard CAN/BNQ 0413-400-6 Soil
Amendments -
Alkaline or Dried Municipal Biosolids. This is a product standard which
was developed by the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ), a
standards
development agency recognised by the Standards Council of Canada.
Standards developed by the BNQ are not themselves regulations but can
be used as
Guidelines and/or referenced/used in developing future Canadian
biosolids regulations. Comments provided by the Committee drew from the
US experience
providing references and information regarding dioxins and furans,
sample methods and reporting. The Committee's comments were shared with
NBMA
members in British Columbia. Through participating in the review of the
BNQ document, the NBMA keeps our members informed of regulations that
may
affect their biosolids programs as well as encouraging them to provide
agency specific comments.
The NBMA Regulations Development Committee welcomes Denise Vieira as a new
co-chair representing British Columbia. Denise is a Project Coordinator
with SYLVIS and recently served as NBMA Program Coordinator while Maile
Lono-Batura was on maternity leave. Welcome to the team Denise!

Theme: Drugs
Public concern regarding the range of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds in surface waters continues to be high. In this
month's library there are articles on the fate of estrogens in soil applied animal manures, a risk assessment for pharmaceuticals in waters,
triclosan
in sediment and the effect of nitrification processes on estrogen in the wastewater treatment plant. And just when you thought you were getting a
grip
on all of this, a final article on the persistence of prions through the wastewater treatment process with partitioning to biosolids.... click
to continue to the library.
