CIC has "Need to Know"
Michael Pocchiari Vice Chair Community Involvement Committee

The beginning of a new year awakens in us a profound sense of giving.  Whether it’s our time, money or other resources, we give back in a way that is meaningful to us.  The Community Involvement Committee (CIC) is committed to keeping that sense of giving alive throughout the entire year.

In 2006 the CIC wants to create and foster community awareness and action.  We want to not only be a catalyst, but a conduit for you to get out and be a part of your community as a member of MT-SHRM.

We want to know the ways you like to give back or participate in community organizations, what organizations you are involved in, and how MT-SHRM can help.  We want to combine our efforts with yours and your organization’s to maximize the positive impact on our community.

As HR professionals we are in a unique position to aid our constituents on a daily basis.  In our profession, giving is a large part of what we do to accomplish our goals.  The CIC is your avenue to extend your sense of service and give back to the community at large.

If you or your company participates in community organizations, please contacting me, Michael Pocchiari, at 813-784-4679 or any member of the CIC.  We look forward to working with all of you in 2006.

2-1-1 Can Be Good Resource for Employees
Doug Fluegel Director, United Way 2-1-1

Even if your company offers an Employee Assistance Program, United Way’s 2-1-1 community resources referral help line can be a valuable resource for your employees.

Studies indicate that most people seeking help have to call seven to eight phone numbers before getting to the right agency.  2-1-1 streamlines that process and is free, easy, confidential, and available 24/7 in 150 languages.  Callers talk to a real person who is trained in supportive listening, and even if callers don’t know what type of service they need, our referral specialists will help them figure that out and give phone numbers and addresses of the closest provider.

2-1-1 removes many barriers to asking for help – there are no lines, no applications for programs you're not eligible for, no missing work or tardiness. For some employees 2-1-1 provides a safe option for getting help, especially if they are unable to call from home due to domestic violence, drug abuse or other dangerous situations.

Since its launch in August 2004, 2-1-1 has helped people in 14 Middle Tennessee counties access an entire range of programs.  These program range from help with domestic violence, substance abuse, counseling, and healthcare, to disability and transportation services, senior care and parenting and childcare programs. 2-1-1 has an extensive database of more than 4,000 programs.

Many corporate phone systems are installed with 2-1-1 blocked by default.  If your system has this problem, just contact the person you would usually call when your phone doesn’t work.  They will know how to remove the block.

We provide posters and brochures to promote 2-1-1 in your workplace as an additional benefit that is a "no cost" benefit to the employee or the company.  To get set up, simply call your United Way coordinator... or dial 2-1-1!
