In a matter of weeks, we will gather around the table once again with family and friends, with our community, to retell
the dramatic escape from slavery in Egypt, relive the Exodus, re-experience the story of our people...our story. Passover is more than just
another tale of freedom or a liberation adventure. Each year we re-live our history and are changed by it! Each taste of matzah
transforms us into participants in our people's journey from the degradation of slavery to the exhilaration of redemption. The story of the
seder is not meant to "pass over" us, rather it is supposed to pass through us. The Exodus became for us as a people a moment of profound
transformation! We went from a people of infinitesimal value to one of inestimable value, from worthlessness to worthiness, from lowly to
exalted. As slaves, we could only react. As free people, we could initiate. As slaves, we were subject to the whims of
capriciousness and had no choice but to obey. As free people, we were empowered to choose and question.
The tremendous impact of the Exodus is felt by us Jews even today as it shapes
our response to the challenges of our world. Mitzrayim is real. We are experiencing today the squeeze of the "narrow places." Every
day we read how our Davis schools are staggering under the crushing weight of budget deficits and financial cutbacks. Drastic measures are already being considered by the school district to: close an entire school, Emerson Jr. High, severely reduce the popular GATE program, and endanger the fairly new DaVinci High; radically reduce the teaching staff,
forcing many of the most dynamic, caring and talented teachers to look
for work elsewhere; eviscerate the arts and music programs that we have come to expect and value as a vital part of our children's
education. |

Can we stand idly by while the heart of our educational system is bled to death? Passover reminds us that
with our freedom comes tremendous responsibility; the responsibility not to be silent, but to act, to become involved. We must raise our voices
in protest to save our schools. We must help raise the needed funds to save jobs and programs. We must raise one another's spirits so as
to not lose hope. As we move from Purim to Passover, Esther and Moses serve for us as worthy exemplars for our own human role in bringing about
transformation and change in the world. God, it seems, only works miracles through us! In both our escapes from Egypt and Haman, it was
because of human activity--Moses' constant pressure on Pharaoh and Esther's intervention with the king-- that we managed to be redeemed. Each
of these biblical heroes showed us what we could aspire to become, and through them we understand that we are agents of change and in effect the
principal actors in our own redemption.
As a community and as individuals, I believe we have the potential to speak in powerful ways to help make a
difference in this cause. Please contact me if you would like to help work to unite our voices on behalf of our children and our schools in
Davis. As we taste our freedom this year at Pesach, let it remind us of our responsibilities as well.
With blessings for a Chag Sameach,
Rabbi Greg Wolfe

Purim Carnival - Having Fun and Raising Funds
"When Adar Comes - Be Happy" and we were!
Hamentachen, pizza, magic, prizes, eye-catching theme baskets, and a balloon raffle - - all in two and
a half hours! That was our Purim Carnival, under the superb leadership of Joy Cohan and her successor in training, Denise Hoffner.
Although the auction now is a part of the Kvell in the County event, Purim still is an enormous production
comprised of endless small details which must be sewn seamlessly to bring it to its successful completion. Thank you, Denise and Joy.
Thanks also go to Ron Fader for games and booths; to Matt Rosenberg for the fun new balloon twisting activity; to Dea Diamant and Cheri Herman for
pre-sale tickets, to Laurel and Eric Hassid for food ; to Leslie Brumer and Hedy Sala for prizes; to Stephanie Moss, Cherryne Kravitz, Jami Alvarez,
Stacey Souza and Annette Fineberg for soliciting balloon raffle donations.
Additionally, appreciation goes to the parents who generously donated items to the class' themed baskets,
and to Judy Young (Joy's aunt) for assembling the baskets attractively. And, we were blessed to receive help of all kinds from our teens -
Sunday school graduates who are now Keshet students: Maya Abramson, Danya Axelrad, Valerie Brown, Ben and Max Brumer, Ian Cohan, David Conard,
Melanie Greenfield, Leah Julian, Caroline Paikoff, Rebbeca Rubin, Emily Seropian and Ariella Wolfe. Todah Rabah!
For Joy Cohan's outstanding eight year commitment to orchestrating the Purim Carnival, and to Ron Fader's
two years of meticulous operation of our game booths - - thank you very much. I know you'll stay within reaching distance!
Families experienced the Whole Megila in family programs Herzl waving the Israeli flag, David Ben Gurion
holding Israel's Declaration of Independence and a kibbutznik with an orange visited our 3rd graders and their families, sharing their dreams and the
realities of Israel. Our students snacked on pitas and chocolate spread, and made Hamsahs to hang on the east wall of their homes as a spiritual
compass to Israel. Fifth graders and their families grappled with Creation, Revelation and Redemption, three themes in our Torah, our prayer service
and our lives. We discussed the relevance of these topics to becoming bar/bat mitzvah, and participants made kiddush cups to use and to remind them
of the kiddush prayer which includes these themes.
Keepsake art projects complete in our classrooms "Jerusalem in Water Colors", a yearly project we offer to
our 3rd graders, took place in March. Thanks to Janice Purnell for bringing this project to our students every year and for giving them the
opportunity and the tools to express the beauty of Jerusalem in pictures parents will want to display in their homes. As you attend the
Community Seder, you'll enjoy again the colorful, original matzah covers which are decorating your tables. For several years, our fourth grade
students have been painting these matzah size silk squares and donating them (temporarily) to the community Seder. They get their art work back to
use during their family Seder the following year. What a special way to bring our Religious School to a community celebration!
Dates to Remember Tuesday Apr 1st Hebrew school resumes Sunday Apr 6th "Jewish Symbols Hunt" family program for 2nd
grade Sunday Apr 13th Pesach program in Sunday school Sunday Apr 20 Pesach. No Sunday school Sunday Apr 27 Yom Hashoah & Israel Memorial Day
service 11:15 a.m. - noon for grades 5-7 and up (more details soon)
Keshet News Confirmation students, along with their parents, recently have been engaged by Rabbi Wolfe in conversations on
Ethical Wills.
Save the date: on Wednesday April 16, we are planning a program for Keshet and DRTY that will focus on Pesach themes, and will join to
celebrate at a Chocolate Seder. |

Attention All DNJJYites! Our Winter events went off quite well and were an awesome success.
Participation just keeps growing.
Our night in downtown Davis and Yogurt Shack brought over 15 teens together to socialize and enjoy a
healthier frozen treat. Rocknasium also brought friends together to kick off Spring Break. The Car Scavenger hunt had to be postponed, but have
no fear, I am working on it for our Spring calendar.
Also, this Spring, look forward to bowling and arcade games at the Memorial Union at UCD, a pool
party, movie night and much more. With the sun coming out you can be sure we will be enjoying the great spring weather. Stay tuned to
your email for the Spring Calendar, and if you are not receiving our DNJJY updates, please drop me a line.
Teen turnout at the CBH Purim Carnival was great, and I hope to see such participation at future
synagogue programs. I also want to thank all you parents out there - if it weren't for your commitment to our youth, our program would not be
what it is. If you are interested in hosting our DNNJY pool party, or maybe a Sunday afternoon BBQ please let me know and also what dates are
best for you.
Lastly a bit of housekeeping, please make sure to fill out and return your DNJJY membership forms to
the office. Teens will not be allowed to participate if their emergency forms are not on file. If you have any questions about events or
the youth group, please feel free to email me at cbhyouth@yahoo.com - Louis Sachs

The CBH Board of Directors met March 13,
2008, with the following actions:

Guest Mark Rutheiser explained the
significance of CBH's original pro forma (financial plan) and the current pro forma, based upon our new loan terms, and from which we are now
working. We are assessing the suggested reserves called for in the new pro forma, and will soon proceed to pay down principal per the new
pro forma, working toward a five-year loan pay-off.
CBH will be hosting the Yom HaShoah event
at Mosaic Law on April 30. Please plan to attend this community program. Also, call Rabbi Greg if you are interested in carpooling to the
"Israel at 60" celebration at the Capitol on May 11.
As part of the Board's on-going work,
Board panels are in formation, to receive input from congregants regarding questions and concerns. More information is forthcoming.
A part-time bookkeeper has been
hired.
Deborah Conard has resigned from the
board; her seat will remain open until filled during regular board elections in June.
If you are interested in a position on the

Thanks for the Spiel! Thank you so much to everyone who worked so hard
on our Purim Spiel this year. It was a pure labor of love for me to devise the lyrics to fit the songs of Guys & Dolls to our story, and a real
education to see what it really says in the Book of Esther as I adapted the script. Linda Glick is a fabulous partner and very creative
director and performer. Our cast worked tirelessly: Sheila Beyer, Ken and Karen Firestein, Susan and Joseph Finkleman, Lou Ziskind,
Robert Levine, Rosanne Mandel, Joy Cohan, and Linda Bresnick. Erik Daniells provided expert accompaniment. Behind the scenes were Neal
Levine and Linda Ziskind. Rabbi Wolfe made it all possible with his financial support and of course his good humor. This show was fun for
everyone, especially me! Thanks, Sarah Pattison
