Emmanuel: The Lord is with us

Brad Mauldin

Director of Christian Life

"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.’”

Revelation 21:3

I wonder if I truly grasp the significance of what it means that the Lord is with us. Each December I see the garland and wreaths decorating the campus, people’s homes, and the shopping centers, and it instills in me an excitement for the season. However, I wonder if the excitement in me is more about pleasant feelings and memories than it is about the earth-shattering reality of God becoming man so that He may dwell with us? Do I fully realize what it means, as Paul says to Timothy, to celebrate “the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh”? In thinking about this I stumbled upon a reflection on the meaning of Emmanuel that was written by an early 20th century pastor, Reverend John T. Reeve:

“Emmanuel-God with us. Yes, but what did God come here to do? Why was Jesus born, and why did He grow up and live here upon earth? Just to glorify childhood? Just to create a beautiful sentiment that annually should enthrall a rough and cruel world? Did He come here just to explore this portion of His universe or even to set us a good example of how heavenly beings ought to live? Or did He, as some would say, come to teach us and hence became the world's greatest Prophet?"

His own Word tells us why He came and what the great end of His earthly mission was: "But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons" (Gal. 4:4). In another place He says, "Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Matt. 20:28). In other words, Jesus came into this world to die. That was the great end of His mission. What would it have profited for a mere ordinary man to die? Only a being of infinite worth could die and by His death "destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Heb. 2:14,15). Only a God-man could accomplish such an end. And this end we know by experience Jesus did accomplish, hence His name, Emmanuel. It is indeed, God with us; for no one but a divine Redeemer could have wrought such results as the Christian Gospel has wrought wherever it has been proclaimed and received. Truly indeed, God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.

No wonder the angels sang on that holy night, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14). The angels knew what a sad and hopeless world this was. They also foresaw the glorious consequences of this event when Christ was born and the star stood over the stable in Bethlehem. No wonder the heavens rang!

And so will our hearts respond in glad acclaim as we, too, realize the mighty portent of the Savior's birth. Nothing will so enlarge our vision of this vast plan of God for the redemption of men and the restitution of this depleted earth, as the contemplation of this great name, Emmanuel, God with us.”

The amazing truth is that God is, has been, and always will be with us; may we make the season of Christmas a time to reflect and celebrate that truth!

Word of Mouth Matters

Every admissions survey reports the same conclusion—word of mouth matters.  Who do you know that needs to know about Wesleyan? Family Open House will be from 1:00 to 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 10 beginning in Yancey Gymnasium.  All Wesleyan ambassadors will be on hand to give tours and guide prospective families.  The festive event offers prospective families a chance to talk to administrators, faculty, and coaches and see live science experiments, hear musical ensembles and watch sports competitions.  The highlight each year is the set of speeches from current Wesleyan students during the seated program, so don’t let your friends be late!  RSVP is NOT necessary.

2009 - 2010 Admissions Applications

Parents – if you are planning to apply siblings for the 2009 - 2010 school year, please  contact the Admissions office for information and applications. You may complete and submit the application on-line, stop by the Admissions office to pick up a packet from Sylvia Pryor in Gillfillan Hall, Room 110, or download the application from the Wesleyan website.

It is important to make an appointment with a psychologist for the Joint Admissions Testing Program (JATP) (required for grades K – 5th) before December 15th to avoid a late fee.  Please email Sylvia Pryor at spryor@wesleyanschool.org for an electronic copy of the JATP brochure.

Small group tours are also available.  The tour dates and times are listed on the Wesleyan website. Call Beverly Boeschen at 678-223-2252 to schedule an appointment.

Lower School Bible Blast

Service:  The Operation Christmas Child project was a big success with 225 boxes collected in the lower school.  Thank you to all that participated!

“Uniqueness” has been this month’s core virtue.  Students were able to focus on selected characters in the Bible that were different, set apart, and special.  God used them all for His greater good.  From David as a young boy chosen as Israel’s next king to John the Baptist’s different appearance and dietary preferences of locust and honey, God used them in each in His own special way.  He does that with us too!  So before we are quick to make fun of others, we are reminded that God has made us all unique and uses us in special ways.

Kindergarten:  Moses has grown up and has a big job to do.  He went before Pharaoh to tell him to set the Hebrew people free.  They had been slaves for too long.  Pharaoh said “No, no, and no.”

*So what did God send to the people of Egypt?

*How many did He send?  Name two or three of them.

Pre 1st and 1st Grade:  Jealousy is a feeling that could make us do something we would regret later.  Joseph’s brothers were jealous of Joseph.

*Name one reason why they were jealous of him.

*What is one thing they did to him that was bad? (Tossed him down a well or sold him to traders.)

*Who was Joseph sold to?  (Traders.)

*Where was he taken?  (Egypt.)

*Who did Joseph eventually working for? (Pharaoh.)

*What is the king of Egypt called? (Pharaoh.)

*What did Joseph do for the Pharaoh that made him trust Joseph? (Interpreted his dreams.)

*Did Joseph stay mad at his brothers?  (No, he forgave them.)

*What did Joseph do for his brothers? (He had them move close to him so he could provide them with food and care.)

*Who can we compare Joseph to?  (Jesus.)

2nd Grade:  We are studying the life of Moses.  We have been seeing God’s plan as He takes Moses through different experiences.  We see God preparing him for a great position of leadership.

*What was Moses’ sister’s name?  (Miriam.)

*Moses’ brother’s name? (Aaron.)

*What did Moses do to make him run from his familiar home of Egypt?  (Killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew.)

*Who was the king? (Pharaoh – Ramses.)

*What are the people called who live in Egypt? (Egyptians.)

*Was Moses a Hebrew or Egyptian? (Hebrew.)

*How were the Israelites living in Egypt?  (As slaves.)

3rd Grade:  Joseph has been favored by his parents, even above his other eleven brothers.  Why? (He was the first son of Rachel and Jacob.)

*What gift did Joseph’s father give him to begin the jealous streak of his brothers? (A Coat)

*Who was Joseph’s oldest brother? (Reuben.)

*Youngest brother?  (Benjamin.)

*What annoyed the brothers about Joseph?

*What did the sun and moon and 11 stars stand for in Joseph’s dream? (Jacob and Rachel were the sun and moon, and the 11 *stars were the brothers.)

*What did the brothers do with Joseph to “get him out of the way?” (First they tossed him down a well. They then sold him.)

*Who did the brothers eventually sell him to? (Traders.)

*Where did they take him?  (Egypt.)

4th Grade:  Mrs. Wood’s fourth grade Bible classes are studying the geographical regions of Palestine (Israel today) and mastering the Old Testament books of the Bible with an emphasis on major and minor prophets.

Greetings from the Lower School Counseling Office!

Nancy Jones

Lower School Counselor

This past week, I attended my state school counselor’s conference in Augusta, Georgia.  One of our keynote speakers, Mr. Keith L. Brown, was extremely motivating and energizing.  A book that he has published was summarized on the front of the t-shirt he wore: it had the word “impossible” with a red circle and slash on top of it – in other words, “NOT impossible.”  Below that, it said “I’m possible.”  He encouraged us to stick that little apostrophe between the “I” and the “M” at the beginning of the word impossible, and to remind ourselves that we have LOTS of possibilities.  What a great lesson for our students!

We want to give our children the tools they need to be “possible,” and to make it through the things that are difficult.  To that end, we are busy working on how to be a good student, how to be a good person, and how to be a good servant of God.  Take a few minutes over this holiday week to not only tell your children why you are thankful for them, but also tell them all of the ways you think they are “possible.”  It is important for them to hear this on a regular basis from the people that matter most to them – YOU!

Have a peaceful and blessed Thanksgiving!

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SCHOLAR AWARD

It is with great pleasure that the College Counseling Office announces that Maddie Lopez, Wesleyan senior (Class of 2009), has also been named an AP Scholar by The College Board in recognition of her exceptional achievement on the college-level AP Exams.  Approximately only 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in 16,000 schools who took AP Exams in May 2007/May 2008 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit such recognition.  Congratulations to Maddie and her family.

High School Guidance

Heidi Lloyd

HS Counselor

Parents,

Our children need to be equipped to handle all the things that life throws at them, big or small.  It is critical that we teach them a strategy for problem solving while they are still in our care, so that they will have the confidence to know that they can solve the problems that come their way when they are in the “real world.”  We should also give them LOTS of opportunities to use this strategy, instead of solving problems for them.  They need practice!  This practice will help build their confidence, help them think critically and creatively, and help us rest in the assurance that they are prepared for life’s curveballs.   I’ve attached a model for you to teach your children.  When a problem arises and your children bring it to you, walk them through this model each time.  Help them become so practiced in problem solving that using this strategy becomes second nature for them.

Thanks!

Excitement is building over the 2009 Gifts in the Garden Gala Auction on March 28, 2009! This fabulous black-tie evening at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead will feature a silent auction, an elegant dinner, a live auction and – this year! – a live band! Dancing will definitely be in order, so, choose your shoes wisely: Remember, the Ritz-Carlton has rooms available for those of us who would rather not drive ourselves home. Visit the Gala Auction website, for complete Auction information, including how to make your hotel reservations.

So many people do so much to make our Gala Auction a successful fundraiser for Wesleyan School. Auction proceeds go directly to our school to meet the financial needs at hand. During this season of thanks and reflection, let us acknowledge those who are making an early impact on our efforts:

A special “Thank You” goes to our sponsors, without whom our Auction wouldn’t be the Gala that it is! New South Construction Company is again our Diamond Level Presenting sponsor, courtesy of Katie and Doug Davidson. Our sponsor list is growing thanks to Wesleyan families and businesses. Please click on “sponsors” above to go to our webpage, where you’ll find a complete list of contributors and information on how you can be a Gala Auction sponsor, too!

Special sponsorship opportunities, which feature advertising highlighting your company or business, include:

Spotlight sponsor for Pre-Auction Party, Emerald level

Spotlight Sponsor of Floral Arrangements, Ruby level

Spotlight Sponsor for Entertainment

Spotlight Wine Sponsor

These opportunities allow you to contribute directly and visibly to the Auction evening. And, who would be more popular than the Band sponsor…?! But, of course, sponsorships are available at all levels. Please visit the website or call Detra Abernathy at 404-310-0864 for more information.

- And, many thanks to everyone who made our 2009 Gala Auction Grow the Garden dinner parties a collective success! Those who attended generously provided event sponsorships and fabulous donations for the Gala Auction. In return, everyone enjoyed an evening of fun, delicious food, and the company of friends! But, of course, an extra-special "Thank You" goes to our Grow the Garden planners, sponsors and hosts:

  • Dinner was providedby everyone's favorite Italian restaurant, Ippolito's (Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell).
  • Wine for the evening was provided at a “Wesleyan” discount by Chris Hintonof The Wine Store (Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell).
  • Our gracious hostsprovided a beautiful, festive backdrop and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome:
    - Patti and Dan O'Leary
    - Julia and Sean Cook
    - Diane and Read Davis
    - Meg and Steve Brooks
  • And, of course, our party planners did a great job of pulling it all together:
    - Emily Brehmer
    - Susan Frerking
    - Carolyn Thykeson

- Thanks, also, to our entire Gala Auction volunteer army, led by Auction co-chairs, Kim Sutton-Adair and Frances Robertson, for all of their hard work on our behalf.

Keep visiting the website for current Gala Auction information. We look forward to seeing you at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead (in your dancing shoes!) on March 28!
