Mysterious '87' Campaign Reveals Startling Truth About Tobacco Use

Everyday in Texas, 87 people die from tobacco-related diseases. This alarming fact was the focal point of oriGENal voice's "87" campaign that took place at Paredes Middle School and Bedichek Middle School in Austin during the first two weeks of May.

On Monday, oriGENal voice posted thirty "87" posters throughout the two campuses to create a buzz among students and teachers about this mysterious number 87. On Wednesday, a morning announcement revealed to more than 2,000 students on both campuses the meaning of 87. Students were urged not to use tobacco and to remember what 87 represents. After the announcement, posters stating the meaning of 87 were put up and left for the rest of the week to remind students of the number's significance.

The campaign was evaluated by implementing pre- and post-announcement surveys to 75 sixth graders, and, based on the results, "the '87' campaign successfully raised students' consciousness and awareness about the dangers related to smoking." The results also stated, "the majority of students currently intend to remain non-smokers and understand the negative health consequences associated with smoking."

Kula Yoga Impacts Girls in Austin Community

"Kula" means community in Sanskrit, and Kula Yoga Center plays a big part in strengthening the Austin community. The studio sponsored a table at the GENaustin Jive, providing funds for after-school programing that builds critical thinking and leadership skills in middle school girls. The center is also emphasizing the importance of health and well-being for girls. A spokesperson from Kula Yoga stated, "We love supporting young women and are considering doing a teen girls class."

Thanks for Groovin' at the GENaustin JIVE

May 3 was a groovy evening at One World Theatre, full of great tunes by Skyrocket!, good friends, incredible food and refreshments, and a silent auction jam-packed with priceless treasures.  Once again, the JIVE raised almost $100,000 to make it possible for us to reach girls at a pivotal stage in their development. We would like to thank those who helped make the night a success, including everyone who sponsored tables or bought tickets, donated items to the auction, or volunteered. Your generosity helps provide girls with critical thinking skills so they can grow into strong, confident young women.
