President's Message

By Colleen Hamilton

Hello Fellow California Members.

It's amazing how experiencing an APLD conference can enrich your life in even the tiniest of ways...This realization came to me last week, when I had a very exciting day in my garden.  My two grandsons, five and three years of age, were playing outside during their week-long visit from Boise.  A couple of branches on my Magnolia tree were too low and needed to be trimmed.

As I was pulling at one of the branches, so I could prune it, I saw a funny little bump.  I then noticed that the bump was a hummingbird nest with two tiny little eggs in it.  A closer look and I could see that one of the eggs was slowly breaking open.  How wonderful to have the eggs hatch right before our eyes!  Of course Mama Hummingbird was not overly excited about me being there, so I even experienced the sound of a hummingbird worried about her young.  Together with my grandsons, I was witnessing quite an event.  We were very careful and quickly left the nest alone so Mama Hummingbird did not abandon her young.

However, my grandsons were able to learn first hand how birds hatch.   Over the next eleven days Mama Hummingbird became used to me, at least a little bit. She no longer whirls around me.  The little birds have grown from the size of a tiny worm to a larger worm and are now getting a little bit of fuzz on their bodies.  I am actually taking pictures every other day as I watch these tiny birds grow.  What fun it is and what a wonderful learning process!  I am so thankful that I went to the APLD Conference in Pasadena last year where I had the opportunity to see a hummingbird nest.  If I had not been at the conference I surely would have missed this great gift of nature.

My question to you is, are you utilizing all the opportunities and learning benefits of APLD?  Do you attend district functions and other industry events?  Are you learning from the sharing and experience that APLD and our members offer?  There is so much to know in our profession, how can we ever absorb it all?!  Enjoy and share the process with members and industry professionals.  I love how designers are willing to share.

We have such beauty in the outdoors and we get to work in and around Mother Nature.  Take the time to experience some of it for yourself and offer what you have learned to your clients and fellow designers.  Your time and efforts will be rewarded.  I know I will enjoy watching my hummingbirds grow up and leave their nest.  I plan to share that with you.  Please watch for my update next month.

Your 2008 president,

Colleen Hamilton

Photographs Wanted for the APLD California Newsletter

By Li Vellinga -

APLDCA Communications Chair

Our thanks to Alma Hecht, who contributed this lovely picture of her San Francisco garden. It is always so inspiring to see nice photos in the newsletter, hence the request for photographs. So, here is your opportunity to get a little publicity while also sharing your work with the rest of the membership.  If you use photos of your clients' garden, please be sure to get their permission in writing and forward it with the photo submission. The pictures could be a garden scene, a close-up of a flower, birds, butterflies, accessories, a focal feature, or anything else garden related.

If you have any questions about this, you're welcome to email me at communications@apldca.org

Thank You and Happy Fourth!!!

Notice of Error

Last month Suzanne Arca was featured in the Awards and Recognition section of the newsletter, where it was stated that she had been published in the EBMUD book. This was an incorrect interpretation by the Newsletter Editor (yours truly) and Suzanne asked me to have it corrected. Sorry about any inconvenience this may have caused others.

Description

Escape those August doldrums and join us for a much-requested presentation on the uses of metal in the garden!

Our speaker will be Eric Powell, a noted artist and metal fabricator. Eric will present many of his designs of gates, furniture, railings and sculptures and will discuss various metals and finishes. Most of his work is high-end, but he will also discuss what is possible for a moderate sized budget.

Powell says of his work, ‘In making sculpture, gates and furniture I cross over the line of so-called function and so-called non-function all the time. On the one hand they are distinct and different languages. On the other hand they inform and influence each other. I don’t think in strictly categorical terms. The difference between design and art is something to explore, not something to try to define’.

Powell’s studio is located in West Berkeley. His work includes commissions and his direct studio work. He has completed over four hundred public and private commissions since 1989.

Powell’s most recent Public Art commissions are ‘Mandala Gates’, entry gates for the City of Berkeley Corporation Yard, Berkeley (2007); ‘Ripple Effect’, the gateway to Goodman Swimming Pool in Madison, Wisconsin (2006); the entry gate for Bella Vista Park in Oakland (2005); and five bronze sculptures for Golden Gate Park’s Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco (2003). He is presently engaged in public art projects for the cities of Brentwood, San Francisco, and Castro Valley.

Cost

Members: $5.00. Visitors: $15.00. Students with id: $10.00. ($5.00 is for room rental).
