clubGEN Girls Warn Other Teens about the Dangers of Cyber bullying, Tobacco and Unhealthy
Relationships
clubGEN girls are hoping to change the fact that girls are twice as likely to be both the victims and the perpetrators
of cyber bullying, by helping girls develop campaigns to combat it. This effort is part of oriGENal voice campaign month aimed at motivating
and educating students about how to promote social change through self-awareness, self-empowerment and advocacy. Throughout March, every
clubGEN after school program within AISD middle schools participated in campus-wide initiatives, by choosing to educate their peers on one of the
following topics: the dangers of cyber bullying, tobacco or unhealthy relationships.
The majority of the girls selected the topic of cyber bullying as the social issue that they wanted to act upon to
change. The high school girls facilitated groups with middle school girls and, throughout the month, developed advocacy campaigns, murals,
announcements and skits to help educate their peers about the dangers of cyber bullying.
"We are so proud of our GENaustin clubs who really have taken this critical topic and created fabulous advocacy
programs to generate awareness among their peers,” said Julia Cuba, Executive Director of GENaustin. “It’s really
wonderful to see them finding and using their own voices.”
