The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District reminds the public, "After the rain, remember to drain."

Water management is critical this time of the year, as late rains followed by warm temperatures create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. "Be sure to empty objects around the house that may collect water such as buckets, tires or flower pots at least once a week to avoid developing mosquitoes around your home," said Dave Brown, district manager. "One bucket of water can produce over 1,000 mosquitoes a week, so draining these containers will go a long way at reducing mosquito populations."

For those who plan to be outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, specifically at dawn or dusk, remember to apply an effective insect repellent.

District personnel are available to address any mosquito problem you may be experiencing by calling 1-800-429-1022 or visiting the District online at FIGHTtheBITE.net.

To sign up for the District's spray notification via e-mail log onto http://www.fightthebite.net/ulv-signup.php

To report a dead bird or squirrel call 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473) or visit the California Department of Health Services online at www.

UC Davis Welcome is an on-campus, one-day program for admitted students and their families.  Welcome activities will be held Friday, April 6; Saturday, April 7 and Friday, April 13.  We are anticipating up to 4,000 guests per day.  Guests typically arrive around 7 a.m., and head home after dinner.  We would like to give our guests plenty of options to find lunch or dinner, and maybe even some shopping in downtown Davis.  When they register, our guests receive a packet of information, and we think it would be great to include coupons/incentives from various downtown businesses.  Also, we have space on our program agenda to print business information of 2-3 downtown eateries willing to offer our guests a discount of some kind.

Please be prepared on these dates for crowds of admitted students and their families.  UC Davis is appealing to students not just because of the on-campus environment, but also because of the friendliness of downtown Davis.  I also would encourage you to post congratulatory signs in your window for these newly admitted students.

Thank you in advance for your participation in helping make UC Davis Welcome a success!
