Boom! Voices of the Sixties: Personal Reflections on the '60s and Today

Tom Brokaw

In The Greatest Generation, Brokaw eloquently evoked the experience of the Great Depression and the Second World War. Now, in Boom!, he presents an epic portrait of another defining era in America -- the tumultuous sixties. This virtual reunion of some members of “the class of ’68” offers wise and moving reflections of people’s lives during a time of high ideals and profound social, political, and individual change.

Now, as she confronts the realities of growing older, MacLaine reflects on her journey and her greater understanding of her own life experiences. Sage-ing While Age-ing explores a wide range of issues - health and nutrition, spirituality, and MacLaine's views about the greatest mystery of all: what happens after death.

The Hearts of Horses is a remarkable story about the connections between people and animals and how they touch one another in the most unexpected and profound ways.

Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself

After recovering from a nearly fatal medical emergency on a mountaintop in Chile, Alda chose to express his gratitude by chronicling the moments in his life that have had special significance to him.

His message is consistent: it's not what you do in life, but how you do it. Notice everything. Always be open to new ideas and new experiences.

In a book that is candid, wise, and as questioning as it is incisive, Alda amuses and moves us with his unique and hilarious meditations on questions great and small.

Barack Obama

In The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics -- a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit. He explores the forces that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. At the heart of this book is his vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems and build a radically hopeful political consensus.

Kitchen Literacy: How We Lost Knowledge of Where Food Comes from and Why We Need to Get It Back

Share an evening with Ann Vileisis and learn more about the history of your supper!

Ask most people where food comes from, and they’ll probably answer, “the supermarket.” Today, most foods travel 1,500 miles before they reach us. Fruits are doused with chemicals, and steaks come from huge feedlots. But, eating local and organic is becoming an important part of food-buying and preparation.

Kitchen Literacy is a sensory-rich journey through the history of making dinner. It chronicles profound changes in how Americans have shopped, cooked, and thought about their foods through two centuries.

Ann and her husband live in Port Orford. While researching the book, Ann was a short-term fellow at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. Her first book, Discovering the Unknown Landscape: a History of America’s Wetlands (Island Press, 1997), received prestigious honors from two national history organizations.
