SNEAK PREVIEW
WASC Conference, October 9-11, 2009

The student leaders in the Greater St. Helens League Association of Student Councils are busy preparing for the 2009 WASC Conference in Vancouver: T.N.T. Today, Not Tomorrow. Check out their promotional trailer to gain a sense of the enthusiasm they are already pouring into this annual high school leadership conference sponsored by Washington Student Leadership.

GREETINGS
A few Saturdays ago I worked with student leaders from Ferrucci, Glacier View, Stahl and Edgemont junior highs in the Puyallup School District. It was a good day. Before starting their weekend, the principals and advisers welcomed the students in the morning with donuts and thanked them for serving their schools. The host school, Ferrucci Junior High, had an exemplary leadership program made evident through the burst of activities and attention to inclusion that was displayed on the walls, and the student leaders worked eagerly for seven hours. Through a 1-3-6ing activity, the participants boiled down the job of a student leader to one word: love. Then, to be practical, they listed 24 ways to do this on a daily basis at school. Three of their ideas struck me as universal tips that all of us can use in each of the roles we play in our lives:
  • React well in tough situations
  • Expand responsibilities
  • Do what is best for others

RESOURCES & ACTIVITIES

A Year of Looking at Inclusion
The WASC Board has selected the topic of inclusion as a theme for the 2008/09 school year. We have created a PBwiki on inclusion to document success stories, share activities, list resources, store documents and pose questions. We hope you visit our PBwiki throughout the year to add to our collective wisdom.
Invite Key: inclusion

"Thank You" to Tiffaney Golden of Castle Rock Middle School for the idea of posting a link to a Web site with a multitude of special events calendars on our Wiki.

Calendar of Special Events
Retired school librarian Linda Bertland of Philadelphia maintains A Virtual Middle School Library as a resource for students, parents and teachers. A part of the library is a Virtual Wall Calendar that helps you locate special events for each day of the year. From Oatmeal Month to Clown Appreciation Day to School Counselors Week...this extensive site can help a student leadership program recognize the unique individuals and groups that compose the world. A great homework assignment could be for students to identify individuals or groups in the school for recognition/inclusion. The Web site could then be used to match the individual or group to a special event or find a special event to build an activity around.

Our Space: THE WASC BOARD

The WASC Board believes that the work of student leaders is crucial to the academic and social success of all students. Two sets of guidelines have been designed as a tool to elevate the work of student leaders at the school level and through a local association of student councils (groups of high schools organized for a purpose).

Program direction for a School Association of Student Councils
Program direction for a Local Association of Student Councils

Also, a "How to form a Local Association of Student Councils" information packet has been designed for groups of high schools interested in organizing and becoming a part of the WASC Board.
