around the corner -- Tuesday, November 25, 2008! Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. and events are scheduled 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Your child will soon be bringing home invitations for you to mail or give to your grandparents or special friends. Along with the
invitation, there will be an RSVP form for YOU (not the grandparents) to complete and return to your child’s teacher. Although you will
receive invitations and forms from each of your children, please return only ONE RSVP form per family. The deadline for RSVP’s is Friday,
November 14th, but please return yours as early as possible so that we can successfully plan! As in the past, we will provide photo buttons for
your guests. Two photo buttons have been ordered for each child and will be given to the grandparents/special friends at registration (if you
have two sets of grandparents attending, each couple will receive one button). If you would like to provide your guests with more than 2
buttons, you may order additional buttons by contacting Deena Coughlin (SeanandDeena@comcast.net or 770-662-5554). The cost per additional
button is $5.00 and all orders MUST be received by October 27th in order to be available on Grandparents’ Day. Please watch for additional
information in the November Update, including information on parking, the event’s agenda, and how to direct guests who will be visiting both
the lower and middle schools. If you have questions in the meantime, please contact: Heidi Straughan (straughanheidi@gmail.com or

Lower School BIBLE
BLAST
The core virtue for the month of October is RESPECT
- responding with words and actions that show others they are important.
Memory verse: “Show proper respect to
everyone.” 1 Peter 2:17
Service: The month of October provides many
opportunities to serve our community. If you would like to be a part of a walk, drive or collection, your students will bring home the necessary
information to sign up. This is a great month for family service as well. Thank you for all you do to make Wesleyan and our community a
great place to be!
Kindergarten – Our kindergarteners are learning
the role of the shepherd and sheep. Psalm 23 is a poem written and sung by David, one of the greatest kings in the land of Israel. As we
read the psalm, we learned what each line meant and how God is our shepherd and we are his sheep. Ask your kindergartener to name the fingers on
their hand that reminds them who to pray for…it’s the Hand Prayer.
Pre
1st - After the world was created, people forgot to worship God and perhaps wanted to be God. So they
built a tower, thinking they were as smart and powerful as he was. Soon God changed the way they spoke. Why did he do this?
First
Grade – As we conclude our study of Creation, we have
learned the days in order that God made our world. Who named all the animals? Where did Eve come from? Was God excited about his
creation? Noah was a good man. How did God use him to change the earth?
Second
Grade – We’ve been learning the biblical
timeline, the Garden of Eden, and the existence of the dinosaur. When did they exist? Were they on the Ark? What happened in the
Garden of Eden? What does BC stand for? What does AD stand for?
Third
Grade - The Father of a New Nation has been our concentration
this month. Who is he? Where is he from and where did he go? Why did God choose him? What kind of character does he have? Does
he have family members and who are they? Where did Lot and his wife live? What happened to Lot’s wife when she disobeyed
God?
Fourth
Grade – After studying the prophecies of the Old
Testament, the fourth grade will be learning not only the books of Old Testament but a map study of Palestine/Israel and the country’s
geography and history.

Mrs. Bobbie Lencke, private Educational Consultant,
has been involved for more than 35 years in early childhood education and development. Drawing from her experience as a classroom
teacher, director of Wesleyan’s Preschool program, and past Director of Admissions at Wesleyan School, she provides parents with helpful
information in identifying kindergarten readiness.
This is not a lecture on public vs. private
education or about Wesleyan School. There will be a question and answer period at the end of Mrs. Lencke’s lecture. Friends and neighbors are
welcome. No reservations are necessary.
Lower School Guidance
Greetings from the LS Guidance
Office!
We’ve had a great response to our new Parent
U series, “Becoming a Love and Logic Parent.” I am sorry that we had to turn some people away – our room was
full and we had no extra books! The class will be offered again between January and May of 2009, and I will soon have that schedule
available. In the meantime, feel free to check out the book Parenting with Love and Logic by Jim Fay and Charles
Funk. Our class is based on this book.
Recently, a parent sent me the following quote:
“What you DO speaks SO loudly, that your children cannot hear what you are saying. If you
ARE that, your children will BE that, too.” What wise words!
It seems to be another version of “Do what I say, not what I do.” My challenge to all of us as parents is to
take a realistic look at what we are DOING, and see if matches what we are SAYING to our children. Do we tell them to take
responsibility for their own materials… and then pack their book bags for them? Do we tell them not to use ugly
words… and then yell at them to clean up their rooms? Do we tell them that there are two sides to every story… and
then promptly believe whatever they tell us, without hearing the other side first? There are as many challenges as there are
blessings in parenting. Keep tuning in for more food for thought!
Let me know if I can help you or your
child! Nancy Jones

Morehead-Cain Scholars Program
Wesleyan is most pleased to
announce that Erik Trum has been selected by a faculty committee to be Wesleyan’s first nominee for the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Select high schools throughout the country are asked to nominate one student to participate in the
selection process. Approximately one hundred and forty students will be invited to the Finalist Weekend in Chapel Hill. Last year, eighty-two students
were offered scholarships.
The Morehead-Cain Foundation
seeks to attract “dynamic young leaders” to the University of North Carolina at Chapel. Nominees are chosen according to the following
criteria: leadership, scholarship, moral force of character, and physical vigor.
Congratulations to Erik and
his family for this outstanding accomplishment.
Jefferson Scholar’s Competition Nominee
Wesleyan is most pleased to
announce that Will Taylor has been selected by a faculty committee as our nominee to this year’s Jefferson Scholars’ competition. Select
high schools across the country are asked to select one senior to participate. Approximately one thousand students will be nominated by their schools,
and one hundred of those students will be selected as finalists. Last year, forty-seven students were selected as Jefferson Scholars.
The Jefferson Scholars
Foundation seeks to attract the most promising scholars to the University of Virginia. Nominees are chosen according to the following
guidelines:
The Foundation seeks to find
high school seniors who possess exceptional ability in leadership and scholarship and who show promise of making a significant contribution to the
University community as students and to society at large as graduates. We ask that you nominate the student who best exemplifies the Jeffersonian
ideals of Leadership, scholarship, and citizenship.
Congratulations to Will and
his family for this outstanding accomplishment.
NCTE’s 2008 Achievement Award
In the NCTE’s
2008 Achievement Awards in Writing, 525 juniors were chosen nationally as outstanding writers. Each nominee’s piece of writing was read
and evaluated by two judges – one high school and one college English teacher. Lindsay Ives of Wesleyan has
been selected as an outstanding student writer and is receiving a Certificate for Superior Writing.
NCTE congratulates the
English department for encouraging writing. I thank you all for contributing to the development of writing in our students. It is the consistent
nurturing and encouragement of students from a young age through high school that produces successful writers. Kudos to everyone who played a part in
Lindsay’s success!
Family Connection
Parents of sophomores,
juniors, and seniors,
I am pleased to introduce
Family Connection from Naviance, a Web-based service designed especially for students and families. Family Connection is a comprehensive website that
you can use to help in making decisions about your careers, courses, and colleges. Your students will be spending time using
Family Connection once each month during program time. During that time they will learn about their personality types, learning
styles, career options, and college options. Please ask your student about Family Connection so they can share with you what they
are learning about themselves!

Connect with Kids
Parents please take a moment
to review this article. I hope you will find it helpful in talking with your own children!
Because this resource is not Christian in its foundation, I also want to encourage you to seek the Bible’s
instruction as you teach your children. I think it is important to let them know that God’s desire is for sex to remain within marriage
and that this desire comes from what He knows is best for us.

of Madison Winn (10th)! Serve
His League would like to thank everyone for their participation and especially Christine Kitterman and Lauren Lutton (12th) for all of their efforts in organizing this service opportunity for our Wesleyan community and the

French, Latin, and Spanish National Honor Societies to
benefit the Norcross Cooperative Ministry. The French, Latin, and Spanish classes are challenging each other to see who can bring in the most
non-perishable food items. Each student is being asked to bring in 10 cans to show their support. The French, Latin, and Spanish
National Honor Societies are pushing for this food drive to be Wesleyan’s best ever! That will be quite a feat considering last spring’s
food drive brought in just under 3,800 items! Donations can be dropped off in any of the Modern and Classical Languages
classrooms. Thank you in advance for your generosity to help feed the less fortunate right here in our Norcross
