3rd Week of Advent Devotions: Wednesday, 12/20/06

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth.  He had a message for a young woman promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David.  Her name was Mary.  The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you!  The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!”  Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant.  The angel said to her, “Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you.  You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God.  The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end!”

Mary said to the angel, “I am a virgin.  How, then, can this be?”  The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you.  For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God.  Remember your relative Elizabeth.  It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old.  For there is nothing that God cannot do.”

“I am the Lord's servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.”  And the angel left her.  (Luke 1:26-38 TEV)

What is it about Church of the Beloved?

What I liked about the Church is its sense

Of tradition. Here God's first and providence

Next. From these two, all the details came.

The music, for one, can claim

To be traditional. The hearty beat

Hymns are chosen to form a suite

That illustrates the lesson of the day.

Further they arise from the music of today

Just as the hymns of years ago

Were then the current chants to know.

Then there's the short clip

Of a relevant flick.

The tradition here is to use today's orthodox means and odd

To illustrate the word of God.

The bread, real bread, wholesome and nourishing,

Is a true Eucharistic symbol, seemly and fitting.

In the best of traditions, the exhortations

Illustrate, explore, and apply the day's lesson.

They persuade me to do God's will despite my fear,

And let me know God as the Holy Spirit is near.

What's more the clergy, (male and female), aren't afraid of the congregation.

They even sponsored the Newcomers' Orientation.

Speaking of newcomers, all are welcome, and urged to find their own level.

And children participate in the service. Those that don't revel

In their joy of God. Just as the adults can

With the knowledge that such a celebration won't unman

Or unwoman them. All this helps me overcome my own lacks;

Keeps, week by week, drawing me back.

And there's something about putting the Church together, and taking it apart,

That has, for drawing people together, no counterpart.

Outreach in many forms, is not neglected.

Even that of bearing cookies to the misdirected.

Lastly, the service, by being paper free,

Shows that ecological care blends with Christianity.

O God, you have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary,

mother of your incarnate Son:

Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood,

may share with her the glory of your eternal kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.
