A Note from Jack
Harry Potter prizes: We've been having fun handing out our Harry Potter paraphernalia to our lucky prizewinners. If you haven't stopped by to check our list, please do so by August 9. We'll draw new names for unclaimed prizes on August 14. For that drawing, we're making a special effort to give prizes to people who really want them. So if you were not a winner this time and really want something to remember Harry by, give us your name by August 12. We will restrict our next drawing to a much smaller group and give you a very good chance of winning!

Our survey plans: We will be introducing a new feature soon to create more two-way communication with our customers. Through the use of online interactive surveys, we hope to get feedback and learn more about what is important to you. We will probably use a program called Survey Monkey. If you've had experience with this product and have comments or suggestions, I'd love to hear them (groots@peak.org).

Sincerely,

Jack

Shaggy Muses

Maureen B. Adams

Coaxed through a depression by her golden retriever, Adams, a psychologist and former English professor, was drawn to five exceptional women writers who relied on their loyal dogs for emotional support - Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Emily Bronte, Emily Dickinson, Edith Wharton, and Virginia Woolf.

Despite their different personalities and backgrounds, these writers all had in common dogs that provided stability and consistency in their lives. Each chapter is a mini-biography of an author, offering anecdotes about the deep bond she shared with her dog. From this unusual vantage point, Adams succeeds in linking these writers' lives in various ways.

Hardcover, $24.95
Publisher: Random House Publishing Group, ISBN-13: 9870345484062

The Cleft

Doris Lessing

Eminent novelist Lessing offers an alternative origin story for the human race. Suggesting that that the first human was female rather than male, Lessing invents a cult of ancient women called the Clefts, an ancient community of women living in an Eden-like coastal wilderness.

The story confronts the themes that inspired much of her early writing: how men and women manage to live side by side in the world and how the troublesome particulars of gender affect every aspect of our existence.

Hardcover, $25.95
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers, ISBN-13: 9780060834869

Scots on the Rocks

Mary Richardson Daheim

Daheim's enjoyable 23rd B&B mystery (after 2006's Saks and Violins) takes amateur sleuth Judith McMonigle Flynn, her cousin Serena "Renie" Jones, and their husbands to a remote town in Scotland. When a new Scottish acquaintance mysteriously dies, Judith can't help poking around. There's a ghost, some goofy villagers, and enough suspects to overwhelm any police force. But, but no challenge is too daunting for the cousins.

This is a fun vacation read.

Hardcover, $23.95
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers; ISBN-13: 9780060566531

Pure Flavor

Belcher Beecher Dammeier, Laura Holmes Haddad (Photographer)

The creator of the award-winning Beecher’s Handmade Cheese in Seattle, Kurt Beecher Dammeier knows that great food begins with the highest quality ingredients prepared simply. In this, his first cookbook, he shares more than 125 favorite recipes from his popular gourmet food shops and restaurant.

This is fresh food that celebrates the quintessentially American flavors of the Pacific Northwest. You’ll discover that meals based on great raw materials require fewer ingredients, take less time to prepare, are healthier for you and your family, and taste phenomenal.

Hardcover, $32.50
Publisher: Crown Publishing Group; ISBN-13: 9780307346421

The She Project

Lauren Ohlgren, Sue Crawford (designer)

This book is a local creation through and through. You may know some people who are participants in the She Project. It's an annual event in which participants are assigned a thoughtful phrase, and then take two hours to create an evocative visual representation.

This exquisite full-color book captures the essence of the project. Full color images of the contributions are enhanced by personal stories that contributed to the creative process. It is a beautiful exploration of the universal intimacies women share and their creative responses to ideas.

Hardcover, $49.00
Publisher: Growing Art Press; ISBN-13: 9781934367490

Music

New Impossibilities

Yo-Yo Ma $18.95

Ma is the closest thing to a "sure thing" in our music department. New Impossibilities is the latest album in the cellist's Silk Road Project, which explores musical crosscurrents along the ancient trade route stretching from the Far East to Europe. He gets plenty of help in this endeavor. A menagerie of Asian instruments, from oud to pipa to shakuhachi, join the cello to produce a wealth of colorful sounds. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra pitches in on a few tracks, too.

The Con

Tegan and Sara $13.95

Folk-rock duo (and identical twins) Tegan and Sara first burst onto the Canadian music scene in the late '90s playing the kind of folk-rock and folk-punk associated with other Lilith Fair (in which they participated) artists. Much like the duo's voices, the songs on the album complement each other, play off the other's strengths, and make the record very much an entity instead of simply a collection of tracks, setting it off as an impressive step forward.

Faces of the Sun

Peter Kater $16.95

Pianist/composer Peter Kater is known for his scores for television, film, and theater, as for his own recordings of light jazz and new age music. He has collaborated with R
Carlos Nakai on several native American-themed projects. Here, he chooses ten native flautists, one for each track, to accompany his relaxing meditations.

Americana

Putumayo Artists $15.95

The fourth installment in Putumayo's line of American traditional music, Americana collects a surprising series of roots. There are hints of regional styles embedded here and there, bluegrass throughout, and a healthy dose of the folk aesthetic for good measure. Artists include Mulehead, Eliza Lynn, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Tim O'Brien.

Tribe

Luka Bloom $16.95

This Irish troubadour's new album is typically understated in theme and execution. The charm of Bloom's music sneaks up on the listener. The album's instrumentation is right in line with the vibrant and resonant sound that is synonymous with Bloom's music and features stellar performances by contributing musicians. Like countryman Van Morrison, Bloom is a musical mystic, albeit more grounded in the everyday.
