May 6 Lobby Day Recap

Hundreds of parents, students, school leaders and board members helped to make the May 6 Lobby Day in Albany a success. Nineteen NYC public charter schools sent representatives to meet with state lawmakers and advocate on behalf of their schools. Most attendees reported meeting with their individual legislator rather than with a staffer. Judging by the feedback, participants were very pleased with the results and having the opportunity to talk directly with policy makers.

Next year’s Lobby Day is tentatively set for May 5th. Please mark your calendars. With each passing year, we draw more support for this annual effort. And with a strong show of support -particularly from parents- we send a clear message to state legislators that charter schools “work” as options for parents, as models of innovation for our education system and as leaders for accountability and academic results in the classroom.

Renaissance Charter School Students Going to New Orleans
About 31 students and teachers from Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights, Queens are raising funds for a trip to New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward (May 30 - June 6). The trip is part humanitarian effort and part educational enrichment. Students will work with grassroots organizations assisting in the city's rebuilding effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They will also create a case study of the disaster based on talking with school children about their experiences.
The school has already raised approximately $12,000 through a letter-writing campaign and other local efforts. On May 19th, the school will hold a talent show and raffle. The grand prize is two round-trip tickets to London courtesy of British Airways. For more information, or if you are interested in supporting the trip, please contact Alison Rosow, 718-803-0060, ext. 203, or email at kraphty@hotmail.com.

ELA Test Results 2008

The ELA test results for the 2007-2008 school year are now available on nySTART. Schools are prohibited from publicizing the data until it is officially released by the NYC Department of Education and posted on the Division of Assessment and Accountability's Web page at http://schools.nyc.gov/daa/.

As we have done in the past, the Center will compile and analyze the test data to produce comparisons between charter performance and that of the districts and city.
