CEO's Corner
I participated in a survey last week from a new lifestyle magazine
that wanted to capture information about women and what drives them. I met the publisher, Sharon Reed, at a Tomboy Tools party last
summer. Her selection of questions was very thought provoking. One in particular made me reflect on everyday life and the fears we have
that go along with that.
The question seemed basic enough, "What is your biggest fear?" My
initial thought was, "I really don't have any". I am not saying things can't frighten me at times, or that I am completely fearless. I
just try not to worry, knowing everything will work out one way or another. But I needed to answer this question. What
was my biggest fear?
A few came to mind initially;
I don't like to fly, especially when there's turbulence.
Walking down a dark alley at night, not that I would ever do that!
I have also experienced some fear when my friend and co-worker, Mary, is
not having a good programming day!
All joking aside, perhaps I was missing the point.
After a bit more thinking I came to focus on my profession.
Most people work 40-70 hours a week. That is a lot of time out of your day, week, month and year to spend on something. It is the
majority of your life. That's when the question hit home. My biggest fear suddenly became very clear to me. It was settling in a
profession where I had no passion. I know this fear because I have been there in my past.
Maybe we can all relate to this. If not, I know you
have all heard someone who has said, "I hate my job." My question to them is "Why do you stay?" Are they
really in a position that they cannot make a change? Is it not worth the effort, and what you might initially give up, to know that you can
find something that will give you passion and allow you to be personally satisfied? That may be a question for you. Everyone deserves to
enjoy his/her profession. It's just a matter of commitment. It is that simple.
Thanks to Sharon's 15-minute survey that brought up some
interesting things to think about.
What is your biggest
fear?
