Ready or Not, Summer’s Almost Over

August signifies summer’s end and for many Houston families, the start of a new school year. Even parents with children too young to attend school can use this time to begin anew. It’s like making New Year’s Resolutions without the guilt. Here are a few ideas for jumpstarting a new school year that’s rewarding for every family member.

  • Get a trim as a troupe. Your youngsters aren’t the only ones who’ll feel sharper with a new hairdo or freshened tresses. Try scheduling your appointments at consecutive times. If your roots need more attention than your child’s (I’m raising my hand!), line up an early morning appointment when you and the kids are well rested. Pack a book about the first days of school to keep your child entertained as your appointment wraps up. (See some book suggestions to the left.)
  • Head out early to select school supplies. Kids love to pick out their own spirals, folders, etc. While the pre-assembled kits make it easier on parents, they zap kids’ enthusiasm. Save your sanity by getting the supply list as soon as possible. Then take the kids shopping in the morning when stores tend to be less crowded. Clothing shopping can work similarly.
  • Identify one night a month for Family Fun Night and take turns choosing the activity. No, all responsibility is not on your shoulders. Try putt-putt golf or bowling with kids elementary age and older. For younger children, consider dinner at a kid-friendly restaurant or a picnic at the park. Cool off with a trip to the local ice cream parlor. Yum!

While back to school time can be stressful for parents, it’s important to help kids get started on the right foot. It’s also beneficial for adults to avoid running themselves ragged. A woman recently told me: “The days are long, but the years go by fast.” As you can, take a step back and put it all in perspective. When your children reminisce on the first days of school, you want them to fondly remember feeling prepared and excited. If they also remember your eager participation, you’ll get the gold star.
