Lots of exciting things have happened at Hemlock since our last issue of
e-Inklings. The
leaves have fallen off the trees, the perpetual rain has begun to fall, the holidays are right around the corner and we've added another 40"
perfecting press to our line-up. Check out
What's
New for the inside scoop on more equipment installations.
Your response to last issue's Tricks of the Trade section made us realize that many of you enjoy getting helpful technical information - we
hope you
put the File Submission Guide to good use. This month, we're going to cover tricks for building files for perfect-bound books - we know A/R season is
coming!
So read on, e-Inklings subscriber, read on!

Heavy Metal
|
|
 |
No, we're not talking about the heavy metal that comes with tight jeans, electric guitars and
the infamous mullet. We're talking about Heidelberg heavy metal - the kind that those big shiny presses are made of.
Once again, we're expanding to help serve you better. In order to make our production more efficient and your jobs even more beautiful, we've
installed a new Heidelberg 40" 8-colour perfector press. In combination with the 40" 10-colour perfector that was installed just one year ago, these
two presses will allow us to print even more full colour work in a single pass through the press, saving you time and money.
In January, make your catalog and magazine projects even more efficient by using the CutStar roll-to-sheet feeder on our 10-colour press. Combining
the cost benefits of web offet with the flexibility of sheet-fed offset, CutStar allows us to meet your quality expectations, while offering you
a wider range of stock options as well as savings on paper pricing and sheet waste. We're interested in developing competitive programs for your
projects - talk to your sales representative
about these opportunities.
We're also having two new "babies", also due in January. A new 20" six colour press with aqueous coating and an additional 18" QM-46 two colour press
to turn around your imprinting orders even faster.
So for those of you that aren't fond of big hair bands, we hope you'll like this alternative. And no, we don't mean grunge bands, combat boots and
plaid jackets...

Crossing Over
|
|
 |
Ever open a perfect-bound book and wonder why the image crossover from the inside-front cover
to page one doesn't line up? Ever want to use that first spread to feature a beautiful image but didn't go there because of that pesky hinge score?
Ever wonder, what on earth is a hinge score?
The hinge score is the crease that appears 1/4" from the spine edge on both the front and back covers of a perfect-bound book. Yes, it has a purpose
- to facilitate easy opening of your book. Your first and last pages are always glued to the cover to where they meet the hinge score. This also has
a purpose - to hide the glued edge of the book block where it meets the spine.
How do you deal with these details? How do you incorporate this into your design? Download some tips here and speak to your production planner for
any clarification.

Recyclopedia |
|
 |
The environment is a hot topic right now. Not a fad, but a change in thinking. Neenah Paper's
Environment ® line is featured in this really cool book, printed by a really cool printer (us!). The Recylopedia features all the sheets in the
Environment ® line-up, printed with incredible imagery and messaging and the most unique binding method we've ever seen.
A true masterpiece, this book was awarded with Hemlock's Q3 Forest Friendly Award, voted on by the members of Hemlock's Sustainability committee. In
recognition of this incredible project, Hemlock donated $1,000 to the Nature Conservancy - an environmental beneficiary that Neenah Paper selected.
