At the end of the school year when the grades have been tabulated and the last locker cleaned, what will be left are the relationships you have built. ASB Legal Issues
September 19, Cascade High, Everett
Join ASB law authority Marty Fortin, director of AWSP learning centers, for the ASB Legal Issues workshop on September 19 at Cascade High, Everett. ASB funds are unique in that the law requires students, advisers and administrators to collaborate on the use of funds for extra-curricular activities. This interesting, spirited session covers ASB rules and regulations, budget writing and meeting organization.

 

Raising Student Voice and Participation (RSVP)
Training for High Schools
September 20, Sumner High
Raising Student Voice & Participation (RSVP) is a student engagement program sponsored by the National Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The RSVP process uses democratic dialogue to give students a chance to speak out and take action on school improvement and community issues. Organize a five-member school leadership team to join the training at Sumner High on September 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sonics Leadership Day, November 28

The annual Sonics Leadership Day will occur in the late fall rather than mid-year. The featured keynote speaker is up-and-coming basketball front office talent Sam Presti. Presti is in his first year as general manager of the Sonics after working for the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. The popular Sonic Leadership Day is sponsored by Washington Student Leadership and the Seattle SuperSonics.

Student Workshop Presenters at WASC Conference
One of the strengths of the annual high school WASC Conference is the variety and depth of the student-led workshops. Each year about 50 student leaders from across the state facilitate workshops centered on one of five focus areas: involvement, diversity, recognition, improving school success and successful programs and events.

Special Dates for Activities Calendar 2007-08
Many opportunities exist for planning special activities during the school year. Whether to honor individuals, groups or just to break the normal routine, a special activity on a specific date can be meaningful.
Below are a few special dates for October:
  • National Book Month, Oct. 1-31: Organize a month-long book collection and donate books to local hospital, nursing home or day care center.
  • National Chili Month, Oct. 1-31: Organize a chili-cook off as a fundraiser or pre-event for a football game.
  • National Newspaper Week, Oct. 6-13: Organize a school trivia contest based on contents of the local newspaper.
  • National School Lunch Week, Oct. 14-20: Organize an appreciation and recognition event for the food service workers at your school.
  • Dictionary Day, Oct. 16: Organize a use-a-new word day at school.
  • Freedom of Speech Week, Oct. 22-28: Organize a letter writing campaign around local, national and world issues.
  • Red Ribbon Drug-Free America Week, Oct. 24-31: Organize drug awareness-raising events.
  • National Knock-Knock Joke Day, Oct. 31: Organize a Knock-Knock Joke slam.

The purpose of the list is to provide information to assist principals, teachers, parents, and students in making decisions regarding participation in a wide variety of program opportunities.
