May .................................................

As we inch closer to the blooming of May flowers, the library is brimming with books, bustling with activity thanks to Carlisle readers like you, and bringing you news about upcoming programs and important issues. From Caribbean music during school vacation week, to early college admissions advice, Alzheimer's and memory loss, the library encourages lifelong learning and independent thinking with programs and collections for you. Do you value the library? A gentle reminder that May 5 is Town Meeting and the Library budget and request for funds to plan for the repair and restoration of the historic brick façade will be up for consideration. Thank you! - Angela Mollet

Children's Display Case at the Library

Calling all Carlisle kids! Do you have a special collection that you would like to share with your friends and the other patrons of the library? Thanks to the Friends of the Gleason Public Library, we now own a large display case that we want YOU to use.

How does it work? You sign up at the Children's desk and you fill the case with your special treasures for two weeks. After two weeks, your display comes down and the next one goes up.

To kick things off, the first display is Children's librarian Nancy Boutet's treasured Godzilla collection of movies, beanie babies, and action figures. Come by and check it out and make sure to sign up for your own display.

So what do you collect? Your display can be anything you want -Pokemon cards, special toys, something you have made, artwork, coins, stamps, memories from a trip - it's entirely up to you. If you have any questions, you can e-mail Nancy at nboutet@mvlc.org or call the library at 978-369-4898. Start getting that collection together and stop by the Children's desk to make your reservation.

Author, Author

The Friends of the Gleason Public Library are pleased to present Jeff Talarigo, author of The Ginseng Hunter, released in April from Random House.

On June 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gleason Public Library, Jeff Talarigo will read from his second novel, The Ginseng Hunter. This new novel addresses the plight of North Koreans, as seen through the lens of a third generation ginseng hunter. As in his critically acclaimed first novel, The Pearl Diver, about a Japanese woman with leprosy, Talarigo weaves together fact and imagination. Publishers Weekly called The Ginseng Hunter "...A memorable, morally stringent tale." The Booklist review stated, "as incendiary as it is restrained, Talarigo's spare, evocative story provides a crucial voice to a tyrannized country."

Jeff Talarigo won the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award, given by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, for his first novel, The Pearl Diver. Prior to September 2006, he lived in Japan for more than twelve years. In 2007 he was a fellow at the New York Public Library's Cullman Centre for Scholars and Writers. He currently teaches at Boston's Grub Street School and lives in Cambridge. This program is presented by the Friends of the Gleason Public Library.

Dollars and Cents; Nuts and Bolts

Library Budget

As has been thoroughly reported in the Mosquito, the FY09 budget is very tight. The Library had to propose a budget flat with FY08 totaling $487,110. This flat budget will necessitate a reduction in library hours starting in July. The Library will also cut the total budget for collections. Support for the library budget will help ensure that there are no further cuts.

Brick work

The Gleason Public Library has requested up to $40,000 from the Carlisle Community Preservation Committee for Community Preservation Act funds to begin work on repairing and restoring the brick façade of the historic library building. These funds will enable the Library to hire a preservation specialist to thoroughly assess the cause of damage that is evident around the windows on the second and third floors (bubbling and leaking), layout a plan for the repair and restoration work and oversee the selection of the construction company to carry out the repairs.  The Library expects to come forward with a request for additional funds to compete the construction work as early as the fall of 2008.

Thank you for making the most of your Library!
