Internships in Government: Who is Hiring and How to Find Them

OhMyGov!

By Chris Perry

With the impending "brain drain" of the federal government - a massive wave of retiring government workers - recruiting qualified applicants into public service is more important than ever.

Internships are one of the most underrated tools for identifying and engaging unsuspecting new talent. Through internships, employers can showcase the type of work, environment, and various career paths inside a particular government agency. Those with a keen eye can determine potential leaders from the interns they hire and work to keep them in government and train them accordingly.

Coming Soon: New Partnership Online Community

We've listened to your requests and the Partnership is excited to announce that we are launching new online resources this August for makingthedifference.org and Facebook. Call to Serve members will be able to post details about:

  • Federal jobs and internships;
  • Events and career fairs that you will be attending or those on your campus; and
  • Workshops, webinars and online chats (we are providing a free online chat tool for you to use)

Students can search what you have posted on makingthedifference.org and through Facebook. Plus, if they are a Facebook user, they will also be able to add a new "From the Partnership" application to their profile so they can receive customized, real-time job/internship alerts and event notices based on their preferences.

The online application will allow you to manage your agency's or university's content across your organization and we added in review and approval tools for a streamlined workflow.

We believe that these new applications will increase our ability to reach students, but we'll need your help to make it a success. In the upcoming weeks, we'll be sending you details of how to log into the system and set up your agency or university groups. We'll also be hosting a series of webinars to introduce you to the system's features so you can make the most of what it can do.

If you have questions in the interim, please send an email to calltoserve@ourpublicservice.org.

Getting New Civil Servants On Board

Part of ensuring the federal government has the talent it needs is fully integrating new employees into the workplace.

A new Partnership report, Getting On Board: A Model for Integrating and Engaging New Employees, recommends a four-part “onboarding” model to make new civil servants:

  • Welcomed and informed;
  • Committed to the organization; and
  • Ultimately more effective, engaged and productive.
