APLD California
Chapter
March 2008 Newsletter
|
Dear Members,
What a glorious time of year in California.
The sun is shining, the birds are singing and your Chapter Board has been busy;
developing our position statement regarding state laws and our education of how
we work within those laws. Due to recent messages on our Chapter
online forum we felt this information needs to be in writing and
continually be placed at the forefront of any of our educational
programs.
This is the position statement:
APLD CALIFORNIA CHAPTER
POSITION STATEMENT:
EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMS REGARDING
STATE LAWS &
REGULATIONS
AND INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICES
The
Association of Professional Landscape Designers® (APLD®)
is an international membership organization that provides a forum for the
advancement of the profession of landscape design, as well as education to the
public about landscape design. It is
APLD's intent to educate and encourage its members to adhere to all laws and
regulations governing the practice of landscape design and closely-related
industries.
In the State
of California, our California Chapter
volunteer leaders have worked diligently to inform designers as to their role
in educating consumers about California landscape
contract law and the scope of our role as landscape designers. This effort has extended beyond traditional
educational opportunities to include the Chapter's online forum. As is true of any organization, APLD cannot
control opinions expressed by individual members, but can strive to educate
those who are not fully informed and attempt to change their opinions.
The California Chapter
recognizes the ongoing need to educate its membership on a wide range of legal
and policy-related issues in the field of landscape design and construction. This includes compliance with California Current law states
that all jobs with a value
over $500 must be installed by a licensed landscape contractor. state law
regarding the use of licensed companies to perform landscape work.
Volunteer
leaders from both APLD International and the California Chapter are
working to identify key issues and to develop an effective strategy for
disseminating this information to our membership. Our approach will include but not be limited
to: presentations at meetings to enhance
member awareness of regulations relevant to California landscape
designers; continued monitoring of online and in-person member forums; and
continued cooperation with affiliated organizations.
APLD will
continue its practice of educating its members regarding all aspects of our
industry and will do so at every opportunity.
We value the relationships developed with affiliated organizations and
look forward to continued partnership with all those interested in furthering
our educational efforts.
Have a great spring!

District News
Peninsula Chapter's
Writers' Collective
By Kathy Ormiston - APLDCA Peninsula District
Communications Officer
A lot of us garden designers aren't quite ready for our big
moment on HGTV, but we still have some important things
we want to say about gardening and design. Last year, garden designers
Karen Hunt, Judith Grant, and Janet Bell put together a "Writers Collective"
for all the interested Not Ready for Prime Time writers in the APLD's Peninsula
District.
The Writers' Collective is currently made up of ten plus
APLD members who write articles for the Home and Garden sections of the Palo
Alto Weekly and the Los Altos Town Crier. The Town Crier
publishes our articles monthly and the Palo Alto Weekly publishes our
articles four times a year. The Palo Alto Weekly articles also appear in
the Menlo Park Almanac and the Mountain View Voice and they may
also be reprinted in the Pacific Sun in Marin.
We've been publishing the articles for about six months now
and we have found it to be a great way to get some exposure for APLD and
educate people about garden topics we feel passionate about. Even better,
writers often pick up a client or two after having an article published.
Some of the most recent articles have been: "The Side Yard
Escape: How to Create a Side Yard that's both Beautiful and Functional" by
Astrid Gaiser, "Renewing a Garden: A Few Steps can take the Landscape from
'Old' to 'Fresh'" by Laxmi Natarajan, and "Mulch Provides more than Curb
Appeal" by Patricia Evans.
Each article is 500 to 700 words long or about one page,
single-spaced. We also submit several topic-related photos to accompany the
article. Another bonus is the Palo Alto Weekly takes glamorous head
shots of our authors to accompany the articles.
As our membership grows, we will likely try to pick up
additional newspapers. The key for our group has been to seek writing
assignments with smaller newspapers that are located where our designers live.
Currently, most of our writers live in the towns of Palo
Alto, Mountain View
and Los Altos so those are the
local papers we have targeted.
If you want to start something similar in your district,
check to see if any designers in your group have contacts with local Home and
Gardening section editors. These designers could have previously written garden
articles or they could have had their gardens written about. Having these types
of contacts will help you get in the door. If you don't have any connections,
just try cold calling the editor - what do you have to lose? Once you get your
phone call or email returned, discuss some sample topic
ideas with the editors and ask them what their current needs are.
Chances are good these editors are hungry for free local gardening
expertise to fill Home and Gardening pages.

Water Conservation:
Practical Applications
By Deva Luna - CLCA
I read this on my herbal tea bag: "We believe in living as if there is a tomorrow." That's a short version of an
oft-quoted definition of sustainability: meeting the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
How
do you know if you are making the world better or worse for your kids and their
kids' kids? Even small things help. The next Sustainable Landscaping Seminar
hosted by CLCA is designed to move all participants a little bit forward in being
actually 'green'. There will be information for both beginners and experienced
contractors looking to make their landscapes more sustainable. Come to get
practical information you can apply immediately.
Water
Conservation: Practical Applications, is
the title of the second in a series of CLCA sponsored Sustainable Landscaping
Seminars. It will be held on March 29th,
from 8 am to 2 pm, at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
Come also to see Foothill College's
new Environmental Horticulture buildings with their state of the art Green
Roofs.
Keynote
speaker Tom Ash, a nationally known
water use expert, will put our water situation in context, addressing watersheds,
usage, legislation and industry approaches to legislation. There will be a 'nuts and bolts' talk; Urban
Farmer Store owner Tom Bressan will
demystify drip and subsurface irrigation--his talks are hands-on and
entertaining. Additional professionals will be leading small group breakout
sessions termed 'Table Topics' where attendees will learn tips about drip and
subsurface irrigation, ET controllers and weather monitoring, water auditing,
irrigation design, how to tune up an existing irrigation system and more. There
will even be sessions available on Irrigation for Beginners and Sustainable
Landscaping Basics.
The
CLCA Education committee wants to act in alignment with green practices. We
believe small steps can make a difference. Organic box lunches will be provided
by JZ Cool Eatery & Catering in recyclable containers. All organic waste
will be composted at Foothill's Sustainable
Garden. In addition, we ask all
participants to bring their own reusable cup for drinks during the day, thereby
saving the resources that disposable cups or plastic water bottles would use.
(Container Recycling Institute states that 60 million plastic water bottles are
thrown into the garbage EVERY DAY.)
Who
should attend? This seminar is designed for landscape professionals who would
like to move their business in the direction of greater sustainability. For a
downloadable registration form and directions, contact Terry Lyngso at tlyngso@lyngsogarden.com.
