Don't Miss Dr. Patrick McGrath's Documentary "Anxious" Airing Sunday, May 2nd
I had the honor of being asked to become involved in a television documentary focused on the treatment of anxiety disorders that was produced by the Discovery Health Channel. The program is called “Anxious” and will appear on TV on Sunday, May 2, at 8:00pm CST.
Doing therapy is a difficult enough job, but doing it with a sound man, a lighting crew, a camera man, and two producers really makes things more difficult. But, I would not agree to do that show unless there was an agreement that the therapy had to be the most important thing. If the therapy wasn’t primary, then I would not do the show.
Luckily, the people at Discovery Health Channel were in agreement with me, and I flew down to Tennessee to meet with the patient and the film crew. It was an intensive week with a lot of therapy going on; over 30 hours of footage was shot to make a 21-minute long story. You will get to see the highlights of the work we did, how therapy is introduced, and how to deal with the bumps in the road that inevitably come along in the therapeutic process.
The shooting involved several aspects. There will be actual shots of our therapeutic interventions, individual interviews with the patient and myself, and footage of the town and the patient’s day-to-day life. You will become immersed into the life that he has led for the last several years, and get a glimpse of what life will be like after his treatment.
Overall, the patient did a great job. I cannot tell you how everything turned out until the day the program airs, but I think that you will see a great transformation take place. I hope that you will get a chance to watch the show to see how well Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy can work for a patient with anxiety. Thanks for watching.
