| | Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain
Oliver Sacks
An interesting fact: music occupies more areas of the human brain than language. Oliver Sacks’ compassionate tales of people struggling to adapt to neurological conditions have changed the way we think about our brains. In Musicophilia, he examines the powers of music through individual experiences. He tells of a man who is suddenly inspired to become a pianist after being struck by lightning; children with Williams syndrome who are hypermusical from birth; people to whom a symphony sounds like random noise; and a man with no short-term memory except for music. Elegantly written, The Abstinence Teacher illuminates the powerful emotions that run beneath the placid surface of modern American life. | Local Author - Upcoming Event
| | | | | My Stretch in the ServiceRobert MasonRobert will be speaking about his book on Sunday, October 28th, 2pm, at Grass Roots. In 1995, Robert G. Mason had a successful quadruple bypass. Freed from the worry that a major heart attack is lurking around the corner, Mason had a new lease on life and a sobering acceptance of his own mortality. Realizing that his World War II mementos will not mean anything after he dies, he set out to tell the stories behind them. Serving in the American occupation of Japan at the end of the war, Mason witnessed a host of incredible, and sometimes entertaining, experiences. In this memoir, Mason describes Birdlegs, a vindictive Army nurse who learns the hard way to care about and respect the wounded. Mason entertains with the story of a pregnant Japanese prostitute who embarrasses a United States company commander. And he reminisces about how a Japanese general, convicted of wartime atrocities, helps him cope with medical trauma. Mason's army experience changed his life. In this vivid memoir, he recounts the incidents that chronicle the two years of military service that transformed him from an immature nineteen-year-old kid into a twenty-one-year-old adult. Paperback, $14.95 Publisher: iUniverse, Incorporated; ISBN-13: 9780595431625

| Events Coordinator Needed
| | | | | Now that our fall series of author events is underway, we find ourselves needing someone to handle the basic publicity. This person might also introduce the authors and sell books at the readings. We usually host 2 or 3 events a month, mostly on Monday, Thursday, or Friday evenings at 7pm. Good writing skills, organization and dependability are the primary requirements. Some graphics skills may be needed.
We take our responsibility to visiting authors very seriously, so this is an important job that will help ensure a successful event. If you are interested, please send a short e-mail to us at groots@peak.org and put Events Coordinator in the subject line. Thanks,
Jack

| Halloween Musings - The Quest for the Perfect Costume
| | | | | by MelodyI bet I’m not alone in this. Every year about this time, I start trying (desperately) to brainstorm a costume for Halloween that’s intelligent, humorous or gory. Not necessarily all three, and definitely not in that order. This year gory is out since I will be dishing out candy here at Grass Roots to the youngsters who trick-or-treat downtown. While previous year’s costumes have proven to be entertaining beyond expectation, this year I’ve enlisted help, probably the best help a person like me could get. The editorial and design teams that brought us Make and Craft magazine have published a special Halloween magazine for people with similar plights.
