Cesar Chavez Plaza is moving along well and ready for occupancy in September.

Cesar Chavez Plaza (CCP) is a 53 unit apartment style community designed specifically for downtown workers. Downtown employers are encouraged to get this information to their employees as it is a great opportunity for low income employees.

The City of Davis will establish a lottery system for CCP with certain preferences. 35% of the apartments are set aside for people with disabilities. Rents at CCP will range from approximately $250 to $650 per month, depending on the household's income level. A chart showing the income levels for the project is shown below.  The apartments are open to people of all ages.

For more information, go to http://www.community.coop/davis/ccp/.  The site plan, apartment details and a one page informational application are listed on the site. For more inforamtion, call 753-3400.

Seven Temporary Public Art Offerings This Spring in Downtown Davis

Seven artists will have temporary public art offerings from April through June, as the city of Davis makes spaces available for installations and events around the historic Southern Pacific Depot. This project is being presented by the Nelson Gallery of UC Davis and the Davis Civic Arts Commission.

"This remarkable collaboration between UC and the city will result in seven temporary works that will entertain and move visitors," says Renny Pritikin, director of the Nelson Gallery. Plans call for four installations and three events spread out over the three months of the project.  The schedule is as follows:

Installations:

  • Outdoor sculpture by Sacramento artist Dave Lane, in front of the SP Depot, from April 9 through June 30. Lane recycles 19th century steel machinery and transforms it into 21st century cosmic models.
  • Installation in the former Police Substation by San Francisco artist Alan Rath, from April 9 through May 5. Rath uses custom digital electronics to store visual images that will peer out of the windows.
  • Installation in the former Police Substation by Davis artist Diana Jahns, May 14 through June 2. Jahns will create a pastel forest.
Installation in the former Police Substation by Las Vegas artist Stephen Hendee, June 8 through June 30. Hendee will create a stark, science-fiction inspired interior.

Events:

  • Weedwalk by Bay Area artists Arcangelo Wessells and Michael Swaine, April 21. The public is invited to join the artists on a walking tour of the flora of downtown.
  • Welcome reception for Amtrak commuters, including music and keys to the city, organized by Davis artists Steve Lambert and Cynthia Yardley, Friday, May 11, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • The Tactical Ice Cream Unit of the Center for Tactical Magic, with UC theater professor Larry Bogad, on June 8 "rollin' out with frosty treats & food-for-thought!" The Ice Cream Unit will be parked at the SP Depot from 3 to 6 p.m.

All exhibitions and events are free and open to the public. For further information contact Torreya Cummings at tjcummings@ucdavis.edu, call 752-8500, or visit the Nelson Gallery web site at http://nelsongallery.ucdavis.edu.
