What's Up With HRCI Recertification
Credit?
Denis Blackwelder SPHR, Past President
MT-SHRM strives to offer high-quality programs for the benefit of our
members and, based on your feedback, we've delivered. Many thanks go out to our Programs Chair, Lynn Hutson and her committee vice
chairs Tami Lambert-Professional Development, Bob McKown-Leadership Development and Kara Shea-Legal Education, for the outstanding array of programs
they've offered already this year.
Recently, there has been some confusion about pre-certification of our
programs from the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and I'd like to address that issue.
It is important to remember that programs do not have to be HRCI certified
to count as recertification credits for your PHR, SPHR or GPHR recertification. In fact, the recertification application does not require
HRCI certified information. What's important is that the program be related to the HR profession and that you have documentation
of attendance-including the date, location and number of hours.
I recently applied for and received my second recertification and I would
estimate that more than 50% of the credits I listed were not HRCI certified continuing education credits.
Nonetheless, HRCI credit is something we strive for and Rita
Baumgartner, our Chapter president, has worked with the institute to solve the issues we were having. We will continue to provide
HRCI pre-certified programs in the future.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion for our membership.
As always, if you have questions, please feel free to contact me at 615-252-4245.

Walk to Fight Arthritis
Tina Majors Executive Director
The Arthritis Foundation is calling for people to take action in the fight
against arthritis by participating in the 2006 Nashville Arthritis Walk on Sunday, May 7 at the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere. Gather your friends,
family members and co-workers to help raise funds and awareness to fight the nation's leading cause of disability.
With the prevalence of arthritis or chronic joint symptoms surging - now
66 million people, one in three adults and 300,000 children - it is easy to see that it is not only the elderly affected by this debilitating
disease. Baby boomers are now at prime risk and more than half of those affected are under age 65.
Arthritis limits everyday activities such as walking, dressing and bathing
for more than 7 million Americans. This is a disease that can affect many parts of the body, causing pain, loss of movement and swelling. Some of the
most common types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Juvenile Arthritis. By participating in the Arthritis Walk you are taking
the first step in a healthy lifestyle to prevent and control arthritis.
Teams are forming now for the Arthritis Walk here in Nashville and it is
not too late for you to begin recruiting friends, family members, co-workers and neighbors to walk in honor of a friend or loved one with arthritis.
Participants with arthritis will receive blue hats to signify their action in taking control of their condition and those team members who raise $100
or more will receive a free t-shirt.
Join the team for a cure today! To participate in the 2006 Nashville
Arthritis Walk, volunteer or form a team, contact the Arthritis Foundation at
615-254-6795.
