Mary Alice (left) and Emily (right) Porter |
Greeks of the Week:
Team Porter
Josh McKenzie
A force to be reckoned with has hit the MTSU campus. The duo is described as sisters of Alpha
Omicron Pi, one with a mean dodge ball arm, and the other with some amazingly infamous Porter-Poppin’ moves. Who are these women who have
disrupted the harmonious bonds of Greek Life with their substantial dose of high-octane energy?
Emily and Mary Alice Porter can be considered one of MTSU’s top (biological and Greek)
sister duo. Reigning from Murfreesboro, TN, more specifically Eagleville, the sisters have taken over the Greek world by storm,
with everything from intramural sports, to offices in their own sorority, and even academics, both recently being honored for achieving a 4.0
GPA for the fall semester.
Emily, 21, is a junior majoring in Elementary and Special Education. Serving as the current
president of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Emily fills her plate with AOP duties and works with
Outdoor Pursuits at the Rec Center. Emily has made her mark in the Greek community as a woman of substance, character, and, simply put, her
all-around classiness.
Mary Alice, 19, is an undeclared freshman, but has already begun her MTSU career with her
hand in a multitude of activities, easily upholding the Porter name. The AOP Model New Member
currently is a member of Alpha Series, a newly elected SGA Senator, and AOP Historian. The
recent nominee of Most Athletic is an AOP player...a sports player lending her
“expertise” in Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Dodgeball, and Flag Football.
The duo has shared many roles in common, both participating in Fight Song, Flag Football, as
the AOP Junior Panhellenic Delegate, AOP
New Member Board, and various community service activities. Both can also be seen busting a move at next week’s Phi Beta Sigma sponsored Step
Show. Their love for MTSU, Greek Life, and Alpha Omicron Pi is what truly binds Team Porter together. Jump on the bandwagon and be a fan of Team
Porter, their collective dose of spunk and dedicated work ethic will only bring good things to the Greek community.
"Both Emily and Mary Alice are sincere people who are willing to help out with anything you
may need. Stella and our founders would be proud!," says Alpha Omicron Pi Mary Elizabeth Black. |

Kappa Delta Wing Fling
Kappa Delta Sorority will hold their fourth annual Wing Fling on Saturday, April 21, from noon to 3 p.m. Thirteen
restaurants, 10 fraternities and four sororities will compete for the title of "Best Wings in the Boro."
Community members are invited to vote for their favorite wings, with $8 adult tickets and $5 children tickets
available before the event. Tickets can also be purchased for $10 at the door. The best wings in town will be complemented by wonderful drinks and
desserts provided by Kappa Delta. During the event, there also will be children's activities, a silent auction and a wing-eating contest!
Three judges will determine who has the Best Wings in the Boro, including The Daily News Journal's Easy Way
Gourmet food columnist Barb Ford, who makes her second appearance as Wing Fling judge. Husband-wife team Dr. Anantha Babbili, dean of the MTSU
College of Mass Communication, and Mary Gollapalle will also put their taste buds to work in determining Murfreesboro's best wings.
Eighty percent of the event's proceeds will remain in Rutherford County, benefiting the Exchange Club/Family
Center. The remaining 20 percent will go to Prevent Child Abuse America for national public awareness programs.
After raising $12,500 at last year's event, Kappa Delta hopes to raise $15,000, with the community's
support.
We Survived Greek Week 2007
John Carter
Though the weekend activities were spoiled by the weather, Greek Week 2007 turned out to be a
huge success. The recap of the events was:
Monday: Bowl-a-thon at Strike and Spare. Proceeds raised by Greek bowlers
went to Junior Achievement.
Tuesday: Outstanding faculty advisers and Greeks making a 4.0 GPA were honored during
breakfast at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house and awarded certificates of achievement.
Greek Speak Out promoting AIDS and safe sex awareness.
Wednesday: Mr. MTSU at Tucker Theater, won by Jeffery Joslin.
Thursday: Greek Community service day and Greek social at Mellow Mushroom.
Friday: Greek Olympics and Sigma Pi/Pike mixer at the Sigma Pi house.
The Greek Row yard sale was postponed due to inclement weather
and has been rescheduled for this Saturday, April 21 from 6am-1pm. The winners of all Greek Week contests and
superlatives will be announced during the Greek Awards banquet on April 25.

Steppin’ for a Cure/
Black.White
Josh McKenzie
We are now a step closer this week to Phi Beta Sigma’s annual Steppin’ for a
Cure. The step show competition, which will include Panellenic and Inter-fraternity organizations, will compete on Monday, April 23 at 8pm. Tucker
Theatre will again be home to the entrancing step moves performed by each organization. Will Alpha Delta Pi take home gold number two again this
year? All organizations have been sweating-out practices all semester, pumping up the ante. Find out who will triumph this Monday!
But before you watch each sorority and fraternity face-off, a Greek Speak Out is planned at
6pm for all Greek students to attend. Black.White, which had been originally postponed until the April 23rd date, will be held directly
before Steppin’ for a Cure and is based on the FX Network show of the same name. The television show follows families’ daily lives
after they have undergone a racial transformation. The program will last until 7pm, followed by a clearing of Tucker Theatre, with students allowed
to reenter at 7:30.
Announcements:
-SGA Homecoming Committee Applications are now available in the SGA Office (KUC
208) and are due April 27th.
-Congratulations to Chi Omega for a successful Wish Week, raising well over $700 in events
such as Wash for Wishes, Captives for Chi O, and Mr. MTSU- all benefitting the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Editor's Note: In the last issue of Letters, an article was written concerning the
Panhellenic recruitment changes, and those aiding in the process. Zeta Tau Alpha Natalie Cox was not mentioned as a member of this committee. All
Panhellenic sororities are represented in these meetings.
