More Engineers Needed
It was federal engineers who:
- Pioneered space travel to explore the universe
- Reconstructed damaged proportions of the Pentagon within one year of the attack
- Arrested a cholera epidemic in India and developed wastewater treatment systems in Third World countries
- Developed hydroelectric power and new methods of flood control on the nation’s rivers
Yet, today there is a gap between the the number of graduates in engineering and our nation's needs. In fact, a
recent journal article noted
that engineering graduatates have decreased by 15 percent since 1985.
In planning for this school year, think about how you can reach out to engineering students to inform them about the
rewards and opportunities in federal public service. Whether you host a panel on federal service careers in engineering or start
an email list or reach out to engineering faculty, you can change this trend. Our government needs to fill at least 10,679 engineering
positions in the next two years!
Use Where the Jobs Are to target agencies looking for engineers. Then, inform your
campus by getting agency reps on campus to speak at panels or attend career fairs. Also, improve your reach
by getting the Engineering
Quick Guide in the hands of engineering faculty. Submit your ideas to reach engineering students.
