Students Get Close Up of
Neighborhoods
Like BwB Lead programs across the U.S., the MI Lead Team uses "community mapping" to help students learn how their individual
volunteer
work helps the entire community become a better place. This summer, Lead members explored two of Detroit's most vibrant neighborhoods, Southwest
Detroit and Corktown, noting the assets and challenges in each. They spoke with small business owners, directors and volunteer coordinators at
non-profit organizations, and with people who simply live and work in the neighborhoods. Read more.

Trek Team Learns Life Lessons in Mali
This summer, eleven students and three teachers from Michigan participated in BwB's Trek for
Knowledge to Mali. They were joined by two BwB staff members and two interns from Vassar College. The group traveled to Mali to help build a
school in
the village of Seribadjambougou. By the end of the emotional trip, the students lives were changed and they hoped the new school would change the
villagers lives, too. Read

Michigan Members Contribute Hearts & Souls to Community
During the 2007-08 school year, Michigan BwB students raised more than $17,000 to sponsor a school
in Nicaragua. Funds were raised through many different events and creative fundraisers. They also contributed more than 16,000 hours of volunteer
service in their community. The BwB members at Lumen Christi High School in Jackson had the highest number of service hours nationally in the last
year, contributing 3,742 hours to their community. BwB thanks all its members and the schools for their work and support and looks forward to another
great year. Each month starting in October on the MI region's web page, we will highlight the top programs in the region for local community service hours and
funds raised to
sponsor the construction of a school in a developing country.
