2010 August Oz News
Wiz Words

by Jeanne Forbes

After lots of rainy days in May and June, bad weather and humidity has come in with a bang.  With a heat index of 100+ it is difficult for me to get out on my bike.  It has helped to have established goals for this year and try to work toward them.

Riding early in the day and drinking lots of fluid is essential during hot weather.  The Complete Book of Road Cycling states that we each contains about 40 quarts of fluid and 5 quarts of blood.  During hot weather a person can sweat more than two quarts per hour.  If a person is low in fluid their ability to sweat is reduced and body temperature rises.  The book recommends a person drinks before, during, and after riding.  After a ride it is important to weigh yourself.  A two-pound weight loss means you have lost a quart of fluid.  During your ride be sure you have a place to refill your water bottle.  If you become overheated, stop and find a place to cool down.

A big THANK YOU should be given to not only the Oz Bicycle Club membership, but to the Wichita area cycling community as well in the support of Diego Ballesteros in his hospitalization as well as his recovery in the past few weeks before boarding an airliner back to his native Spain this past week.  It was heartwarming for me personally not only to see those bicyclists who came to his side, but also to see all of the television reports of those who rallied around him.

Also a heartwarming scenario occurred when Diego proposed to his girlfriend from his hospital bed. She had flown in to be able to be at his side, not knowing that he was going to propose to her after completing the RAAM course. I have to admit even I teared up seeing that on the television screen.
