2011 October Oz News
Wiz Words

By Delores Craig

Well, we are in the throes of another election of board members.  I am pleased about the folks who stepped up and I know that Oz will be in good hands for another year.  At this time of the year we are all enjoying the beauty of a Kansas fall season, which is pretty much my favorite.  Sometimes spring is too wet and windy, summer is too hot (for sure this year!), and winters can be pretty cold, as we saw earlier this year.  So, in many ways, this is the cream of the year for bicycling.  I keep on riding and loving it.  By now I am well trained, although I have to tune up a bit for those longer rides.  I have done four big organized rides in other states this year, and recommend you consider that sort of thing if your schedule will allow it.  Do you crave one more spectacular ride this year?  How about the beauty many observed on the Walnut Valley Metric?  A few years ago I went back out there in late October, parked at the Liberty Township building, and took off on my mountain bike.  I rode over to Dexter, where I caught a quick bite, including pie, at a restaurant I hope is still open.  Then I rode south along that paved route for about 8 miles, and went onto the dirt roads there, rode the top of a ridge north for a ways, then dropped down along a creek and followed it, eventually getting back to my car.  It was the best that fall has to offer.  There were pheasants flying around, every imaginable color of leaves, and just the amazing peaceful quiet of rural Kansas.  Whether if this appeals to you, or you want something else, I encourage you to take advantage of the great conditioning of all those miles this year, and go for another bit of bicycling.  And don’t forget we still need to hydrate even though it is not still 100 degrees (I hope).  As a final note, be sure to weigh in on the Wichita Master Bike Plan.  Check it out and see if it offers what you want for the future.
    Keep on trekkin!

Wichita Bicycle Master Plan - Online
Survey and Interactive Map

The City of Wichita is creating a new Bicycle Master Plan and as a first step is asking Wichita residents to help identify ways to make bicycling safer, easier and more convenient. Below are links to an online survey that asks why you do and do not bike; and an interactive map where you can identify your favorite routes and locations that can be improved. The survey takes about 10 minutes or less to complete.

The City of Wichita Bicycle Master Plan will identify and prioritize strategies to provide new and enhanced bicycle facilities and increase both the number and frequency of people bicycling in Wichita. The plan will provide a framework and strategies for improving the connectivity, safety, comfort, and convenience of the bicycle network. To learn more about this civic initiative please visit the project website.

In an effort to help reach as many people as possible, please forward and share this information.

Come to the Membership Meeting and Vote for the new Board Members

By Roxanne Wright
Editor-at-Large

Make your voice be heard.  Come to the Membership Meeting October 3, 2011 and VOTE!  Your vote DOES make a difference.  These people will decide how the Oz Bicycle Club of Wichita will be run in 2012.  They need to know what direction you want the Club to go in 2012.  We need more members to be involved as Officers and Committee Chair and Committee members.

During the Membership Meeting you can let the Board Members know that you would like to serve as an Officer or on one of the Committees.  We need fresh ideas for the Touring Committee.  New people to SAG rides and help out the 2012 Touring Chair any way you can.

If you have never been a SAG you don’t know what you’re missing.  It is really a lot of fun meeting and serving the riders.  The riders really appreciate the service.  I know I have.  When you’re down to your last drop of water, there is the SAG.  They have cold water for your bottle and a snack to get you to your next stop.  Also if you just can’t go any further they will bring you and your bike to where you parked your car.  These people are very important to our
club.  So please come out and vote.
