Wiz Words
By Delores Craig
Not long ago I was on a ride, I was speeding down a narrow, twisting, mountain road (not Kansas, duh). Then along comes a man who was driving very slowly uphill toward me, honking his horn and shouting at me. "PIG! PIG!!" he yelled. "PIG! PIG!!" So I flipped him the finger and shouted back some things I dare not repeat as I buzzed by him. Still thinking about this awful man and his shouting, I turned the corner and promptly collided with a pig. Do you ever do that? Fail to understand when someone is trying to tell you something important.
I feel that way about stretching at times. That stuff is for old people who are not in good shape. Hah. That would be me. And I guess there are a ton of other things that I think are just for those crazy cyclists who are over the top in their enthusiasm and devotion to their sport. I love to ride, just want to do the low maintenance version of it. The more time that goes by, the more I understand how important it is to do the high maintenance for the body as well as the bicycle.

Editors’ Bike Corner
by Jay & Roxanne Wright
Editors-at-Large
For the Ozzies that didn’t make it to the memorial service at Eberly Farm on Sunday, April 10th---you missed a wonderful service. Over 200 people showed up to celebrate her life. There where bicycles parked in several places, along with rows and rows of cars.
They talked about how she will be remembered as fun-loving, adventurous, hard-working, intelligent and caring. Even though she was always living her life to the fullest, she would drop everything to help anyone who needed her.
They talked about how she was an enthusiastic advocate for making Kansas a safe place to bicycle. That she was a founding board member of KanBikeWalk. She was also on the board of Prairie Travelers and Sunflower Rail-Trails Conservancy. They talked about her persistence and determination was essential in creating the Prairie Sunset Trail in Goddard. How she was a volunteer extraordinaire and contributed much to our community.

Wicked Wind As I Remember It
By Nancy Jewell
The Wicked Wind 100 this month reminds me of Cecile Kellenbarger’s involvement in the ride for the last fifteen years. Each of you has special memories of your Wicked Wind rides. Maybe the wind was wicked than usual one year making you use your granny gear. Or you missed that turn-off at Lake Afton two years in a row and ended up riding extra miles. My memories of WW100 invariably take me back to Sam’s the Saturday before the event. After seven months of planning the route is set, the brochures are mailed, the T-shirts are here. There are some 400 signed up for the ride. There is the possibility of 600-800 riders total if the weather is good.
After a 6 AM pick-up of the Ryder truck, Cecile and I are at Sam’s loading up the flatbed cart with all the essentials needed for the ride. We operate with a partial shopping list and an estimate of the number of riders. As we load cases of bananas, bags of oranges, tomatoes, boxes of cookies, trail-mix, peanut butter, turkey and more I wonder how Cecile knows when to stop loading stuff on the cart. For a few years I even attempted to write an inventory of what we bought, but somewhere on the second cart I would realize that I had lost track and gave up. She must have had a list in her head because we always had what was needed. After paying our whopping $1000+ bill we would load everything from Sam’s on the rental truck and take off. I would find myself wondering “Where did Cecile learn to drive this thing?” There were still a few more stops for special items. Picking up the power bars and bread from Great Harvest was always fun because I got “paid” with a free sample of bread. Then on to Cecile’s house to start concocting the famous pasta salad and slicing about a zillion tomatoes.
