Wicked Wind 100

Sign Up Early for Wicked Wind

You should have received a brochure for Wicked Wind 100 in the mail already; if not there should be one in the mail any day now. Bring a friend to the ride. This year Lake Afton will again be the starting point for Wicked Wind 100 on Sunday, May 15, 2011. Camping is available for a fee. Showers are free, bring your own towel. Parking is free. We will have the standard 25-, 50-, and 100-mile rides. We have a lot of returning volunteers doing SAG stops this year; please thank them during the ride.

This year you will receive a souvenir ride bandana, if your registration is postmarked by Friday, May 6th. T-shirts are also available during pre-registration for an additional fee. Wicked Wind brochures are available in local bicycle shops and on the Oz website.

The Wicked Wind 100 is an annual fundraiser for the Oz Bicycle club, so please sign up to ride or volunteer or both. Volunteer jobs are still open and many can be done prior to or after the ride allowing you to ride as well. To volunteer or for information contact Helen Wait (316-652-8876 evening), or (316-737-0462 cell) or email hwait@att.net.

Wiz Words
By Delores Craig

At last it is clearly on the road to spring.  Of course surprises can always reside around the bend.  What sort of bicycling action are you looking for?  We have rides for mountain bikes, leisure rides, touring rides, event rides, road rides with moderate to fast pace riders.  In other words, you have no excuse to stay off those two wheels.  You can put the trainer away for another year.

Get ready for the Wicked Wind 100.  Pile up those miles, and then join your fellow Ozzies out there riding, or volunteer.  For the first time in a long time Cecile will be relaxing on the Sunday in the middle of May, and Helen Wait is holding forth, with a lot of support from Cecile.  We all wish Cecile the best in her quest for better health, and hope she is out there to cheer along all the riders.  Helen has a crew of ready volunteers but probably can use more, so if you are not riding for whatever reason, help Helen and the Club have a great WW100 in 2011.  Without people like Cecile and Helen and many, many others, Oz would not exist.  I remember that just about every day.  Thank goodness we have a lot of people out there who have retired from their day job and now make room for Oz.  Give them a hand of applause and a hand of help whenever you can.

Speaking of volunteers, the Chisholm Trail from Abilene to the OK border is just about mapped out, thanks to the work of a number of volunteers.  I want to have a ride in September, hopefully while the Caldwell Cattle Drive is taking place, to celebrate our western history in that special way bicyclists can as we wheel along.

Please note, the Food and Friends and the get-together before the membership meetings will resume.  I tried to balance the east side and west side locations by making most of the dinners before meetings on the east side near our meeting location, and the Food and Friends comes up on the west or downtown.  Check out the calendar to see where Ozzies will be gathering.

I hope that many of you have been able to get out & enjoy some of the great bicycle riding weather that we’ve had in the past month.  I look forward to seeing all of you out on the road in the upcoming month.

The tires are switched out & I’m ready to roll on my singlespeed bicycle in the upcoming months! It’s been a long winter off-season, & I for one am ready to get out & ride a bunch of miles.

     See you out there….

Keep on Trekkin!
