Wiz Words

We count on our great volunteers to keep Oz afloat. Speaking of great volunteers, think about being a Board member. Ben Sciortino is going to be making calls and rounding up a slate of candidates to be introduced at the picnic this month. Being a Board Member means taking an interest in the long term well-being of Oz. The current members deserve a round of applause, as they have patiently dealt with a wide range of issues before the club. Bicycling is definitely in the view of city and county leaders, thanks in part to the efforts of the Board. There are many challenges to Oz as some of our core volunteers are no longer available. New ones appear, but they need the ready support of active board members. Being a board member means attending monthly meetings, and weighing the important issues that confront the Club and the area as we move toward a more bicycle-friendly environment. If you are a newer Ozzie, do not rule yourself out, because getting involved in the board, or other volunteer roles, is a great way to support our sport and friends.
I have been more absent than usual this summer. I went on several large organized rides (Cycle Zydeco, Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska, and SAGBRAW. I also spent some time in the San Juan Islands on a fun ride. Sometimes I feel like the clock is ticking and I want to have as many bicycling experiences as possible when I am in shape to enjoy them. So far the clock and passing years are not too great an enemy. I am grateful to some of the more senior Ozzies who show us all the time that bicycling is a sport for any age. So I will keep pedaling and look forward to seeing you out there at the excellent club rides.
I hope all you Ozzies have been making the most of the summer, although I have heard many people saying they have ridden less this summer, due to the extreme heat experienced in south central Kansas, and throughout the Midwest. Sometimes Mother Nature throws us a curve. Having said that, I want to remind you we can usually count on somewhat milder weather for the fall. September is a great time for Ozzies. We have the opportunity to enjoy fall colors and milder weather. Check out the September ride schedule and realize what a great job Frank and Sandy are doing at touring directors. The turnouts for rides during the heat were acceptable, but let’s give them real support by showing up to honor their hard work.

Editors’ Bike Corner

I cannot express enough about making sure that everyone is safe and well-hydrated out there while riding on their bicycle. It is of the utmost importance that you are not only hydrated before each riding event, but are also keeping fluids in you both during as well as after the ride.
Hopefully, everyone will continue to be safe out there as these temperatures continue to be extreme, and that you take in enough water even before you may think that you need to. By the time you are actually thirsty, you are already behind in attempting to get caught up in having a safe riding experience.
Keep on trekkin!
