Wiz Words
By Delores Craig
I just got back from the Bike Ride Across Nebraska. In many ways it was the opposite of the Biking Across Kansas this year, or so I was told. In Nebraska we had three days that featured high temps of about 62 degrees, with rain. Cool. Of course, the first three days were in the low 90s, so I suppose there was some common ground for the two rides. While on the ride I had a collision with another cyclist. I was going uphill around 10-12 mph; he had head down, plowed into me since he was going about 18-20 mph.
I am mentioning this to remind you that obstacles can come up when you are not expecting it, regardless of whether you are the rider in front or the one behind. I was eying the view, not even concerned; he was concentrating on his climb, giving it all he had. Both of us were lucky. When his bike hit mine, he went flying right into me, knocked me off my bike (thank goodness for Frog pedals that came free) and down over an embankment. Physics being what it is, he eventually came to rest on the concrete of the road, to the left of where we made contact. I was down the hill and to the right. I wish I could have seen it. I am sure it was quite a sight. Remember this when you are out riding with others. Watch where you are going; for sure, but every now and then keep a wary eye to the rear too.
Now on to more pleasant topics. The escort of the Mexican riders was really fun. They were a cheery group, considering how many miles they rode, and the reception at city hall was definitely great. I love seeing how bicycling such a strong part of both cultures is. Celebrate our two-wheeled lifestyle; remember to check out the new urban trails with the signs to tell us of our history. Downtown is really enhanced by those trails with signs. Keep pedaling, watch where you are going, and get out there, even if you are not shooting for high miles. It’s good for you.

Editors’ Bike Corner

Editor-at-Large Well, the heat and wind are currently playing havoc with all of us in the Oz Club. Between that and attempting to look out for hazardous road conditions, it’s been a full-time job looking out to make sure that we are not only safe physically on the bicycle mechanically, but also safe body wise as well.
I have been addressing the need to be prepared beforehand with being thoroughly hydrated before the ride begins in order to not be dangerously low on fluid intake. Also, one needs to have taken in enough nourishment before the ride begins as well in order to have the perfect amount of fuel for the ride.
I personally have a special mixture of fluids in each of my three water bottles that I carry on each of my bicycles. That way, I am sure that I am taking in the proper mix of proteins and liquids in order to make each of my journeys safe as well as enjoyable as possible.
The importance of being properly fueled before any ride---no matter the distance or conditions---is of the essence. In that way, one can be assured of not only a good experience in the saddle, but a safe one as well.
Be sure to know what kind of conditions that you will be riding in before you take off. In that way, it is a better riding experience for not only you personally but to those with whom you are riding as well.
Keep on trekkin!

Our annual picnic this year is September 17. It will be at the pavilion building at Lake Afton. You need to bring a covered dish and the Oz Club will provide the burgers, brats and the plates, napkins, plastic ware and pop. We will have a picnic ride before the Noon meal.
