A new study shows that eating fresh food and avoiding canned and heavily packaged foods can reduce BPA levels by 66%.

Canned food is main source of BPA exposure
Last week, peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives published a groundbreaking study that shows BPA levels drop significantly when canned and heavily packaged food is removed from the diet. The study, done by U.S. groups Breast Cancer Action Fund and the Silent Spring Institute, came to this conclusion after conducting a strict "dietary intervention" with 5 families of 4 in the San Francisco Bay area, where all canned and heavily packaged foods were swapped for a fresh food only diet for 3 days, and urine levels of BPA were monitored and compared to those during regular diet. Check out this video clip of the experts talking about BPA and this new study. There are some companies that are leading the charge on BPA-free cans, and we hope this will soon be the norm in Canada. Here’s what our director, Rick Smith, had to say about the findings of this study.

More toxic hair straightening products! Last fall you likely heard about Brazilian Blowout , the popular brand of hair-straightening product that was found (through lab tests) to contain abnormally high amounts of formaldehyde despite being advertised as “formaldehyde-free”? Well, this week, the top has been blown off the coverage of this issue.
Learn more about it here.

This just in: Parties Respond to our Survey
Wondering where Canada's federal political parties stand on the issues of toxics, Great Lakes, oil sands, green energy, etc.?
Well, we sent a survey of 10 questions to all of the federal political parties and the results from the four parties that responded – the Bloc Quebecois, Liberal Party, Green Party and NDP – were encouraging. Sadly, the Conservative Party chose not to respond.
Read more about it in this blog post by Matt Price, our Campaigns Director, and don't forget to vote on May 2nd.
As Matt so aptly puts it: "Those who show up decide how our country will be run. We don’t let just anyone babysit our kids, so why let just anyone decide their future?"

Nice to Meet You! (At The Green Living Show) This past weekend, the Just Beautiful campaign had a booth at Toronto's Green Living Show, Canada’s largest green consumer show dedicated to educating the public about leading a sustainable lifestyle.
Many of you in the GTA came by to meet the (ahem) lovely campaign staff, scored some free non-toxic soap (thanks to sponsor Consonant Skincare), made some Kiss Naturals lip balm, and entered our draw for a chance to win a free eco makeover from WorldSALON in downtown Toronto (Winner, we'll be contacting you shortly).
We thank you so much for your support and all the great conversations. It was so heartening to hear "actually, I already signed the petition, and get your monthly e-newsletter, and I forward it", and many of you took copies of our pocket shopping guide to give to friends, family, colleagues, and in some cases, your students!
So we just wanted to say thanks for spreading the good word about the campaign and the petition! It is support like yours that makes our campaigns effective. :)
