STATE OF THE STATE
Governor Haslam’s State of the State address was delivered earlier this week and the Tennessee General Assembly is now in session. There are always bills proposed that impact property owners and real estate professionals. The Tennessee Association of Realtors Governmental Affairs Committee, the TAR lobbyist and TAR staff are all working hard to make sure they know about related legislation and are positioned to let legislators know if the Realtor® Party supports or opposes those bills.
In case you did not have a chance to see the State of the State address, you can view it here. And, you can stay informed on the progress of any bill through the website for the Tennessee General Assembly. You can also watch for updates from TAR through the Governmental Affairs section of their website. And, GNAR Past President Alice Walker is the Chair of TAR’s Legislative Affairs Subcommittee this year, so please feel free to contact her with your questions or concerns about state legislation.

SPECIAL TRAINING AT GNAR
The GNAR Legislative/RPAC Committee, along with the GNARPAC Trustees attended some special, focused training at the GNAR offices last week to get the year started. The group watched a video by national political consultant Michael Dunn (pictured left) addressing the importance of political power and influence in protecting and enhancing the real estate profession. They also watched a video emphasizing the importance of every Realtor® to Vote, Act and Invest in the legislative process. Political Analyst Pat Nolan also addressed the group and provided insights on activity at the local, state and national levels.
The Legislative/RPAC committee will be calling on you to engage in the political process this year, so look forward to their contact and be ready to Vote, Act and Invest!
INVEST IN RPAC . . . TODAY!
Make your RPAC investment now, if you have not already done so. The Realtor® Party needs your support at the national, state and local levels to make sure we have the relationships and opportunities to make sure the Realtor® voice is heard and the issues important to us are priorities for elected officials and candidates. You can make your donation online through the GNAR Member Site, call the office and contribute with credit card or mail a check made out to RPAC to the GNAR office.*
MEET YOUR CO-CHAIRS
GNAR Past President Christie Wilson and GNAR Board Member Brian Copeland are the Co-Chairs of the GNAR’s Legislative/RPAC Committee this year. Vice-chairs for the committee are Cindy Stanton and Jay Lowenthal. They, and the rest of the committee members, will be working hard to solicit your help in making the Realtor® voice heard through your willingness to Vote, Act and Invest. Contact them or the GNAR office with your questions or comments about legislative involvement and activity.
*Contributions are not deductible for income tax purposes. Contributions to GNARPAC are voluntary and are used for political purposes. The amount suggested is merely a guideline and you may contribute more or less than the suggested amount. You may refuse to contribute without reprisal and the National Association of REALTORS® or any of its state associations and local boards will not favor or disfavor any member because of the amount contributed. The GNARPAC Trustees will determine annually an amount which will be forwarded to the State PAC. The amount for the 2012 RPAC giving year is $44,000.
GNARPAC will retain all contributions received about that amount for use in the Middle Tennessee region; exceptions will be made in the case of “Major Donors.” Of the funds forwarded to the State PAC, 70% of each contribution is used by your State PAC to support state and local candidates. Until your State PAC reaches its RPAC goal, 30% is sent to National RPAC to support federal candidates and it charged against your limits under 2 U.S.C. 441a; after the State PAC reaches its RPAC goal it may elect to retain your entire contribution for use in supporting state and local candidates.
