Delicious, Nutritious Adventures: The Purple Asparagus Way
“Healthy snack” is a conversation nonstarter for most school age kids. That’s just the kind of challenge healthy eating pioneer, chef (and yes, former corporate lawyer) and Head Spear, Purple Asparagus, Melissa Graham is all about.
Melissa founded the nonprofit Purple Asparagus in 2005 to teach children and the community about healthy food choices for the body and the planet. "We educate children, families, and the community about good eating for the body and the planet," according to Melissa.
Melissa is revolutionizing the relationship between food and kids in Chicago through Delicious, Nutritious Adventures, Purple Asparagus’ signature program designed to help Chicago schoolchildren learn better eating habits and to make simple, healthy snacks and meals. The program is currently in place in over 20 Chicago Public Schools and numerous community-based settings in lower income communities across Chicago.
"By sharing food, we strengthen family and community ties, support local farmers and producers, gain respect for the earth and for the diversity of cultures all over it, and pass important traditions on to the next generation.” Melissa states.
Purple Asparagus is clearly making its mark. Melissa was just recognized as one of eight recipients of Chicago Tribune’s Good Eating Award. The award is given to individuals who are making a difference in Chicago's food and beverage community through their commitment, passion and vision.
