Musings April 2007
As you may have noticed, we were in the Georgia Straight last week! The cover article on the
Yummy Mummy phenomenon has provoked some
fascinating dialogue in our community.
When our Birth Lounge group met the author, Pieta Wooley, we were surprised
to discover how deeply the Yummy Mummy concept is linked to topics such as mother identity, body image, consumerism, and others...
We shared a very talkative afternoon exploring what this term means for us and the women we work with.
I must admit, the first time I saw the phrase on a fitness business card I thought it was
creative, and I will admit that I was drawn into the promise of a "perky bum" or some such... When I emerged
from the fitness program with a bum more plump than perky, I began to wonder: what is this Yummy Mummy thing really about?
Then it began to pop up more often - selling everything from fitness to maternity gear to high-end
slings. To be a yummy mummy, apparently we need to spend some serious money. You may be amused to know that the Yummy Mummy phrase first
emerged in 1988 as a monster-themed breakfast cereal in the U.S.
We've come a long way, baby!
Since the interview we have found ourselves pondering how to best support women to
reclaim the yummy mummy concept as one of inner knowing rather than outward appearances. The answer came from one of you -
Ruth - who wrote us in response to the article:
I used to like 'Yummy Mummy' when to me it meant a really
great Mom rather than a glam queen.
Appearances are just that - appearances.
I appreciate the focus you gave us
- to go within, to find the strength and confidence in ourselves and our
partners to be the best parents we can be to our children.
To me, that's the
yummiest part of this whole crazy world of having our beautiful daughter Lily in our lives.
So then maybe being yummy is an inner knowing and honouring of who we are as mothers and women,
moving in our new bodies with confidence, nurturing ourselves body and spirit.
What have you done for yourself this month that has been yummy? How have you been feeling body and
spirit? What does yummy mummy mean to you? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
For more on nurturing our inner yummy selves, join us as we host the next free Birth Lounge event

Dancing Star Birth News
New Workshop! We are excited to announce that a new Family BellySong evening will begin in June, alternating every other month
with the BellySong workshop for pregnant women and new mothers.
Our BellySong workshops are such a rich experience that some of you have been coming again and
again! Others are asking - what about my partner and older
child? We listened, and now every other month you can join together as a family in creating music and dance. No musical experience or
ability needed! Watch for details in next month's Musings newsletter.
Local soap Many of you have emailed asking about the
locally made soap we wrote about in the March newsletter. The fabulous soaps in
question come from Jah Jireh Family
Soapworks - our favourite one so far is the Schmoopie Sophie's Super
Soother Soap - designed for young children, but we're all using it - even as
shampoo for the boys.
Come and say hello! Come and visit us at the
BabyTalk event at the Roundhouse Community Centre on Saturday, April 14th, from
11 - 3 p.m. FREE
