MARCH-APRIL 2007

HELP PRESERVE OUR PARKS!
California State Capitol, Sacramento

Each year, park supporters from throughout the state travel to Sacramento to advocate for the protection and support of California's state parks.  These meetings make a great impact in legislators' support for key park policies and issues.

The California State Parks Foundation's Park Advocacy Day 2007 begins with a kick-off orientation. Afterward, participants begin meeting in small groups with legislators and other policymakers at the Capitol. At the end of the day, park advocates can attend the Legacy Awards Reception, honoring legislators who have demonstrated commitment to the protection and enhancement of state parks.

Participating in Park Advocacy Day is meaningful, fun, and most of all, easy!  To hook up with the LEJ delegation, call Patrick Rump, 415 282 6840.

THE PEOPLE'S EARTHDAY
India Basin Shoreline Park, Evans & Hunters Point Blvd.

For the seventh year, Bayview Hunters Point will come out to celebrate a healthy environment and community on the People's Earthday at India Basin Shoreline Park.  This year we have a lot to celebrate--the PG&E plant, which has polluted the neighborhood for all these years, was closed in 2006 and is finally coming down.

The highlight of this year's event will be the LEJ youth leaders premiering their new theater production, "East Side Story,"  using music, spoken word and fun to educate the community about the problems that are going on--food security, open space, effects of tobacco, and cleaning up the toxic legacy of Bayview Hunters Point--and how the LEJ youth are here to help make things right, inspiring more people to  join our efforts in fighting for our environmental justice rights.

SATURDAY, APRIL 28

YOSEMITE SLOUGH CLEANUP

Prevent pollution from entering the Bay! LEJ is partnering with Save the Bay, Candlestick State Park, California State Park Foundation, and NorCal Waste Management on a community workday to pick up trash from Yosemite Slough, just north of Candlestick Park.  This area is a real trash hot spot needing special attention; a few hours of your time will make a positive impact on the health of the Bay and the animals that live in it. Gloves, bags and water are provided.   Families are welcome.

RSVP requested: this helps us plan equipment and staff for the day.  You can RSVP at www.savesfbay.org/bayevents, bayevents@saveSFbay.org, or 510.452.9261.  We will meet at the corner of Griffith and Thomas St.
