Dear Colleague,
As part of our continued efforts to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities
in health care, The Disparities Solutions Center would
like to share with you some of our recent and upcoming activities.
Web Seminar Series
This summer we’ll be gearing up to start our web seminar series
funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. These 90-minute, interactive, web-based seminars are free and open to the public.
On Friday, June 29, from 3-4:30 PM EST, join us as we kick
off the series with a seminar entitled “Hospitals, Language, and Culture: A Discussion of the Joint Commission’s Survey of Culturally
Competent Practices” with Paul Schyve, MD, Senior Vice President at the Joint Commission, and Amy Wilson-Stronks, MPP, CPHQ, Associate Project
Director in the Division of Standards and Survey Methods at the Joint Commission. This three year, cross-sectional qualitative study, funded by the
California Endowment explores how 60 hospitals across the country have adapted their systems to provide health care to culturally and linguistically
diverse patient populations. Dr. Schyve and Ms. Wilson-Stronks will discuss the report findings on the challenges these hospitals face and how they
address them. To register for this web seminar, please click here. More information about the Hospital, Language, and Culture project is available on the Joint Commission website.
Other Updates
The Disparities Leadership Program launched its one-year
program on May 29th in Cambridge, MA. Thirteen health care organizations – including hospitals, health plans, community health centers and a
public health department – from around the United States have been selected to participate in a year-long executive leadership program
designed to tackle racial and ethnic disparities in health care. The Disparities Leadership Program is the first program of its
kind in the nation, focusing on training health care leaders to develop practical strategies to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health
care. For a list of Disparities Leadership Program participants, please click here.
The National Committee for Quality Assurance is hosting its conference,
Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) and Health Care Disparities, on November 12-13, in Washington, DC. For more information
about this conference, please click here.
We look forward to working with you toward a common goal of eliminating racial and ethnic
disparities in health care.
Sincerely,
The Team at The Disparities Solutions Center
