Hands On will leverage your gift to foster volunteering

By Andy Nelson

Executive Director

As you create your list of nonprofit organizations to support this holiday season, I hope that will include Hands On Greater Portland.  You may be surprised at the power of your gift.

A donation to Hands On does more than help us support our organization.  It allows us to leverage critical volunteer help for our community.

How do we do that?

We’re a staff with just seven full-time employees, yet we make more than 14,000 volunteers connections a year. We help 300 nonprofits connect with volunteers.  We create more than $1 million of volunteer support for the Greater Portland Area.

Every day, nonprofits call us seeking help while volunteers call us looking to help.  Your donation helps us make the connection.  You help volunteers feed those in need, care for elders, read to children, and restore urban green spaces.  In other words, you help us fill critical needs in our community that, frankly, just don’t get filled any other way.

You do something else, too.  You help us create life-long volunteers.  I have no idea how to estimate the value here.  But it’s huge.  I do know this: sustainable volunteers are essential for the long-term health of our community.

Hands On has roots that go back to the 1950s.  We’ve evolved and grown.  But we’ve remained true to the original purpose of connecting volunteers with critical community needs.

Hands On has emerged as the primary organization in the Portland metro area for connecting volunteers with opportunities that meet their interests and schedules.  Simply put, we’re the only organization of our kind.

Please donate to Hands On this month. We will leverage your donation in a big way.

Thank you.

15 Volunteers, 5 days and 2 Hurricane Ravaged Cities

On Sunday, October 28th, 15 Portland area volunteers met at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana.  This was the meeting place and launching point of the first Hands On Greater Portland Gulf Coast Rebuilding trip.

The call went out this past summer and thanks to the giving nature of the Portland volunteer community, we had no trouble forming a group to go down to the Gulf to lend a hand in the rebuilding effort.  See photos and read about their experiences here...
