MPI Campus Chapter Update (Part 2) - March 2008

Recently, we asked all of the campus chapter presidents to update us on their chapters' recent activities. Because there is so much exciting stuff to report, we had split the update into two parts. In this edition of Manna Mail you can read about what's happening at Vanderbilt, Iowa, Worcester State, UT, and Baylor.

Click here to read the first part of campus chapter updates, which includes UNCW, Louisiana Tech, and the newly forming chapters at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Vanderbilt:

We have over 50 people going on Spring break trips with Manna Project to sites in Nicaragua [see pic], Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Peru. We are working on trying to get Haiti approved for next year and are really encouraging our members to apply to be program directors or summer volunteers. We will be working this spring on events to raise awareness about hunger on campus.         -Christina Yurchak

MPIV's first year of volunteering at Woodbine Community Center has been a success and has accomplished its two initial goals of both establishing a solid "core" of volunteer members as well as publicizing the opportunity to the overall membership.  While we struggled in the fall semester with some accountability issues on the part of the one of the Woodbine staff members, these problems have now been resolved and we look forward to a continued fruitful partnership with the organization.  Manna Project volunteers are now involved in teaching ESL classes on Monday through Thursday nights at both the 6:00 and 7:30 timeslots and we look forward to continued growth and the ability to expand into volunteering with other Woodbine Programs.

MPI-V has also been connecting Vandy students with volunteer opportunities in Nashville including ESL instruction at Conexión Américas and translating at the Siloam Family Health Center.

University of Iowa:

Towards the end of last semester we met with a dean and some activities committee people and got MPI Iowa registered and recognized by the school.  They clarified to us that they can't sponsor overseas trips, but I am thinking they will be supportive of us if we put forth some effort.  We'll try to get in on the next activities fair at the university.  Also, we are planning on having a fundraising dinner at a local restaurant at some point in Feb., who has agreed to give us 20% of sales for one night. MPI-Iowa also sent a Spring Break trip to Nicaragua two weeks ago.

Worcester State:

Manna Project - 'Woo' State Chapter has finally been approved by the Student Government and so we are at last, getting our projects underway.  We are putting together a drive to get playground equipment for the less fortunate elementary schools in the area, as well as money to help refurbish as many playgrounds as we can.  As a team we are going to be spending a weekend in April (18-20) to help build a home with the group "Rebuilding Together-Worcester".  Also, we are going to begin sponsoring a child for La Chureca. And, last but not least, a cell phone drive is collecting old cell phones to send overseas (with calling cards) to the soldiers in Iraq.  So as you can see, we have some local projects and global projects in the works and hope for their continued success.

University of Texas:

I am currently bringing 4 UT students with me to Nicaragua this Spring Break. We are planning on hosting a bake sale this Saturday and next Tuesday to raise money to buy soy for the people so they can have it in their diet. This will be our chance to spread the word about Manna Project.
         -Emily Hsu

Baylor University:

Well, we are still in the process of getting approved. We should probably know within the next few weeks. We will let you know when that happens. Other than that there is not much to report on. We were planning on having a meeting this week or next to talk about fundraising. We want to have a hunger lunch this semester. So that will be our first fundraiser then we were thinking about having an end of the semester fun event or something to that effect. Just to get MPI's name out there before summer. We also have the Baylor chapter MPI facebook group and we are going to start updating that once we get rolling. We also will hold some interest meetings on campus to again get our name out there.
