Last month we heard from our Vandy and UNCW spring break groups. This week, read about the trips from
Iowa, USC and
Worcester:
There are lots of
volunteer organizations out there, but I love the fact that Manna is
run by people my age. It is something that I wish I had discovered a
couple of years earlier, but that certainly isn't going to stop me from
trying to get involved as much as I can from here on out.
-Kevin Dee led a group of medical students
from the U of Iowa to Nicaragua
As a Nicaraguan-American, I realized how big of a part being Nicaraguan is to
me.
Meeting and talking to native Nicaraguans changed my perspective on
needs and wants, and also on what Americans value in life... I had a hard time re-adjusting to life in
LA the week after the trip. Some things just did not seem as important
anymore. This trip really opened me to think on a more global scale.
-Cyndy Hernandez and the USC group spent their
spring break working on the Augusts' soccer field
This trip allowed me not
only to learn about Nicaragua - the people, the culture,
the struggles, the hope, the despair, the love - but also about the people I
traveled with - their hopes, their struggles, and in some cases, their
despair. I have come to believe in the importance of
even small changes and of increasing awareness.
-Bonnie Orcutt led the microfinance team from Worcester,
which helped to develop MPI's own microfinance program
