Scrabble, America's best-selling word game, was originally called the "Criss Cross Words" invented
by an out-of-work architect. He manufacturered the boards and tiles BY HAND, and sold them for $2 each. The game industry was not
interested in the game, and he stopped making them.
A few years later in 1952, the head of Macy's happened to play the game at someone's house, and he
loved it. Macy's ordered some for their store shelves, and they sold 800,000 copies in the first year.
Today, Scrabble is found in one
out of every three American homes. One hundred million sets have been
sold worldwide and between one and two million sets are sold each year
in North America alone.
