Below is an action alert from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence opposing HR 6089, the Illegal Immigrant Deterrence and Public Safety Act of 2006. Because this proposed bill will deter victims of violence who are undocumented immigrants from calling for help out of fear of deportation, Women's Advocacy Project is against the proposed legislation. Add your voice to the millions of people who oppose state and local law enforcement officials having the power to enforce immigration law!

Immigration Bill Threatens Victims of Violence
This week, the House introduced HR 6089, the Illegal Immigrant Deterrence and Public Safety Act of 2006. Title II of HR 6089, the State And Local Enforcement Cooperation in the Enforcement of Immigration Law Act, is a version of the already defeated CLEAR Act.

This dangerous provision is most likely going to pass in the House. More alarmingly, we are hearing that Senators charged with negotiating spending bills that are now being considered (the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Bill and the Defense Department Appropriations Bill) may take the House bill discussed above and tack it on to the spending bills. These spending bills will be very difficult to stop, as they fund the operations of military and Homeland Security.

We Need Your Help Today! Call Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH)  Senator Gregg is chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee, so he is a key decision-maker. Tell Sen. Gregg's office and his appropriations staff why you object to attaching these provisions to the Homeland Security spending bill.

Leave a message on the subcommittee's phone: 202.224.4319

Call his personal office and leave a message with his staff: 202.224.3324

Also helpful are calls to Senator Frist (R- TN): 202.224.3344 and Senator Specter (R-PA): 202.224.4254

Tell the Senators

  • not to attach a dangerous immigration enforcement provision to an overall spending bill.
  • that allowing police to detain domestic violence victims based on immigration status jeopardizes their safety and puts them at risk for abuse
